Jackets seeded 3rd in Division I after tourney draw

MOUNT VERNON – Mount Vernon softball team could host a Division I district championship game.

The Yellow Jackets are seeded third in the Central District after brackets were released on Sunday, May 2. 

The draw was held virtually. The higher seed will host throughout the district tournament this season.

Mount Vernon has a first-round bye and will host the 37th-seeded Reynoldsburg vs. 40th-seeded Central Crossing winner in the second round on May 12.

The Jackets are bracketed with sixth-seeded Delaware, (13-seed) Olentangy Liberty, (15) Thomas Worthington, (18) Gahanna, (20) Logan, (26) Newark, (28) Whetstone, (32) Licking Heights and (39) Mifflin.

Watkins Memorial, which beat the Jackets 8-0 on Saturday, May 1, is the top seed and Grove City is seeded second, with (4) Marysville and (5) Lancaster rounding out the top five.

Danville is the top seed in Division IV and will host (19) Patriot Prep in the second round on May 13.

East Knox is seeded ninth and hosts (18) Wellington, setting up a possible East Knox at Danville matchup in the district semifinal.

Northmor is seeded sixth and will host the (10) Grove City Christian vs. (12) Madison-Plains winner — the division’s only first-round matchup — on May 13.

Top-ranked Cardington is also the top seed in Division III. The Pirates renew their rivalry with (17) Mount Gilead in the second round on May 12.

Fredericktown is seeded ninth and heads to Marion to face (7) Pleasant in the second round on May 12, while (10) Centerburg hosts (11) Fairbanks in one of only two first-round matchups in Division III. The Trojans and Panthers will meet on May 10.

Highland is seeded seventh in Division II and will host the winner of (9) Buckeye Valley and (10) Licking Valley; and Utica, seeded 13th, will travel to (8) River Valley in the second round on May 11.
