Baseball roundup: Tepper goes distance in Trojans' win

Joe Tepper struck out eight batters and allowed one earned run in a complete game to lead host Centerburg to an 11-3 win over Cardington in Knox Morrow Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, April 28.

Brock Hurtt, Tepper and Isaiah Reynolds had consecutive RBI hits as part of a four-run first inning to stake Tepper to a lead.

Hurtt had three hits, scored twice and drove in two runs to lead the Trojans.

Nate Hickman and Tanner Jones had two hits each for the Pirates. Jones scored twice.

Jackets split with Knights in OCC action

Mount Vernon bounced back in a big way with an eight-run fifth inning to roll to a 14-4 win in six at West Holmes in Ohio Cardinal Conference play in Millersport.

Kaden Daugherity provided the big blow with a two-run double. He finished with three RBIs and two runs to lead the Yellow Jackets, and Caden Rowland allowed three unearned runs over 4 2/3 innings for the win.

Micah Martin cleared the bases with a three-run double in the fourth inning that gave the Knights all the runs they needed in a 4-2 win at Mount Vernon on Tuesday, April 27.

Beau Bridges tossed 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing a hit and a walk with seven strikeouts to lead the Jackets.

Fredericktown 2, Northmor 1

Evan Rine hit a walk-off single for a 2-1 win over visiting Northmor on Wednesday, April 28, keeping the Fredericktown baseball team in a first-place tie with Highland in the KMAC standings.

Luke Currier was hit by a pitch with one out in the seventh inning. Pinch runner Reese Cassetto moved to second on a passed ball, setting up Rine for the game-winning hit.

Kaid Carpenter struck out eight batters in a complete game to get the win, and Ty Hatfield and Xavier Mullins had two hits apiece for the Freddies.

Garrett Corwin had two hits, including a double to lead off the fifth inning for the Golden Knights. He scored on a Griffin Workman single to knot the score at 1.

Grant Bentley allowed two unearned runs in a complete game for Northmor.

Highland 9, Danville 1

Zach Pinkerton drove in five runs — three on a home run — to lead Highland to a 9-1 win at Danville in KMAC play on Wednesday, April 28.

KJ Johnson had three hits and Cooper Merckling struck out nine batters over 4 2/3 innings to get the win.

Walker Weckesser and Dustin Beckett accounted for the Blue Devils’ offense with a hit apiece. Weckesser scored off a Beckett single in the fifth inning.

East Knox 8, Mount Gilead 4

Weston Melick had three hits including a homer, and Sam Printz tossed a complete game to lead East Knox to an 8-4 win in KMAC play over Mount Gilead on Wednesday, April 28, in Howard.

Melick drove in three runs and scored three times, and Printz allowed two earned runs on five hits and a walk to secure the win for the Bulldogs.

Ben Whitt had a hit and a walk and scored twice for MG.

Watkins Memorial 14, Utica 7

Nate Younker hit a grand slam in the third inning to help visiting Watkins Memorial snap Utica’s eight-game winning streak with a 14-7 win in Licking County League play on Tuesday, April 27.

Younker finished with two hits and two runs; and Zach Christensen had three hits, two runs and two RBIs for Watkins, which scored eight runs in the third.

Hunter Billman had two hits and two runs, and Logan Brokaw drove in a pair of runs to pace Utica.

Utica’s game with Licking Valley at American Legion Post 92 Field was suspended in the middle of the fourth inning because of weather. The Panthers will hold a 4-2 lead when the LCL contest resumes on Tuesday, May 4.
