Roundup: Hoam leads Freddies to win at Highland

Elsa Hoam took first in three events to lead the Fredericktown girls track and field team at Highland’s tri-meet on Tuesday, April 20, in Sparta.

Hoam took first in the 800-meter run (2 minutes, 35.49 seconds); the 1,600-meter run (5:33.85); and teamed with Kacie Rook, Sydney Wilson and Aspen Maggard to win the 4x200-meter relay (4:40.18) to lead the Freddies, who scored 94 points to beat out the host Scots (66) and Utica (13).

Ashley Cockrell and Summer Weller each provided Fredericktown with a pair of victories.

Cockrell took the 100-meter hurdles (17.27) and the 300-meter hurdles (49.78), and Weller won the discus (88 feet, 9 inches) and the shot put (31-11) for the Freddies.

The Fredericktown relay teams led the boys (79) to a narrow win over Highland (78) and Utica (17).

Billy Woodring, Justin Woodring, Logan Small and JJ Grennell won the 4x100 (49.03); Grennell, Billy Woodring, Small and Jeremiah McKinley took the 4x200 (1:39.68); Caedmon Platt, Xavier Platt, Grennell and Steven Tumbleson took first in the 4x400 (3:55.36); and the 4x800 relay team of Owen Krabill, Titus Krabill, Xavier Platt and Thomas Caputo (8:55.25) took top honors.

Caputo also placed first in the 800-meter run (2:02.02), along with Owen Krabill in the 3,200-meter (11:14.92), Justin Woodring in the high jump (5-4) and Tumbleson in the pole vault (11-6).

Other first-place finishers for the Freddies were Kelly Sapp in the 3,200-meter (15:14.82), Bella Spencer in the high jump (4-6), Sydney Wilson in the pole vault (8-0) and Joshua Rashley in the discus (121-2).

Amarie Morgan helped the Scots in a couple of events. She finished first in the long jump (13-9.5) and teamed with Brylinn Tuggle, Audrey Weaver and Makenna Belcher to win the 4x200 (1:59.11).

Highland also took first in the 4x100 with Tuggle, Peyton Carpenter, Belcher and Juliette Laracuente (52.38).

Laracuente took the 100-meter hurdles (12.96) as well.

Landyn Albanese also won a pair of events for the Scots, taking the 200-meter dash (23.5) and the long jump (18-10).

Landon Remmert won the 300-meter hurdles (43.09); Gavin Hankins the 100-meter dash (12.07); Mason Duncan the 400-meter (57.24); Caden Holtrey the shot put (46-2.75); and the 4x800 team of Mia White, Camryn Miller, Lauren Garber and Jade Disbennett (11:01.3) rounded out the winners for the Scots.

Riley Waggoner won the 200-meter dash (29.38), Laura Brubaker took top honors in the 400-meter (1:05.77) and Silas Bruckenberger was first in the 1,600-meter run (4:57.51) to lead Utica.

Danville tri-meet

Brooklyn Hess took first in four events for host Danville in a tri-meet against Mansfield St. Peters and Delaware Christian.

Hess was first in the 200-meter (27.71), the 300-meter hurdles (53.84) and the high jump (4-2). She also teamed with Alenah Boeshart, Kylee Hess and Rachel Wilson to win the 4x200 (2:01.75) and lead the Blue Devils’ girls team (109 points) to a win over Delaware Christian (73) and Mansfield St. Peters (13).

Boeshart won the 100-meter (12.82) and Kylee Hess took the 100-meter hurdles (20.53).

Jaylyn Workman also took first in two events for the Devils: the 3,200-meter (16:44.53) and the shot put (26-8).

The Danville boys team finished with 69 points to beat St. Peters (57) and Delaware Christian (25).

The Devils’ boys team had a well-rounded effort, winning four individual events and a relay. Finishing first were Nick O’Dell in the shot put (37-0.25); Aiden Bell in the long jump (16-8.75); Bryer Boeshart in the discus (106-2); Jackson Loyd in the 100-meter (11.53); and the 4x800 team of Nate Stephens, Mason Huffman, Thor Pitsenberger and Logan Blessing (10:48.47).

East Knox tri-meet

Alexandria Magers was a part of three victories to lead host East Knox in a tri-meet against Loudonville and Lucas on Tuesday, April 20, in Howard.

Magers won the 400-meter (1:05.4) for the Bulldogs. She also teamed with Emily Opfer, Haleigh Landis and Kaya Salyers to win the 4x200 (1:57.1) and the 4x800 (11:39.82) with Joci Totten, Ella Vannatter and Taylor Severt.

The East Knox girls team scored 40 points to finish second behind the Redbirds (73) and ahead of the Cubs (38). The Bulldogs’ boys team was third behind Loudonville (66) and Lucas (58).

Severt also took first in the 800-meter (2:38.92), and Kaylyn Campos scored five points for the Bulldogs in the 300-meter hurdles (1:07.37).

First-place finishers for the boys team were Dylan Moreland in the 400-meter (55.62), Elijah Carter in the 300-meter hurdles (48.75), Seth Madden in the 800-meter (2:18.69) and Samuel Whitney in the long jump (19-6).

BOYS TENNIS

Mount Vernon swept doubles action, but host West Holmes took all three singles matches to win a 3-2 Ohio Cardinal Conference contest on Tuesday, April 20, in Millersport.

On Thursday, April 20, the Jackets lost 5-0 at Wooster in OCC play.

Against the Knights, Ethan Jarosz and Toby Boggs dropped the first set of second doubles but took the next two over Brody Schead and Jacob Miller to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Alex Buehrer and Brian Sabula defeated Judd Morris and Trevor Miller 6-4, 6-3 in first doubles to give the Jackets a 2-0 lead.

For West Holmes, Curtis Wagner defeated Jack Staats 6-1, 6-3 in first singles, Hunter Ellis beat Quinn Hoffman 6-2, 6-2 in second singles and James Barr won over Wade Brown 6-4, 6-1 to complete the singles sweep.

For the Generals, Mark Wood defeated Buehrer 6-0, 6-0; Francis Sim won a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Beckett Pechon-Elkins and Ben Haven beat Brown 6-0, 6-1 in singles play.

Brock Ranney and Garett Ranney defeated Staats and Hoffman 6-1, 6-2; and Jared Pennell and John Sibilia beat Jarosz and Sabula 6-0, 6-1 in doubles action.
