MOUNT VERNON – Neil Thomas (Tom) Steury, 77, of Reynoldsburg, formerly of Mount Vernon, passed away on Friday, April 16, 2021, at his residence after a brief illness with cancer. He was born on Oct. 1, 1943, in Decatur, Indiana, to the late Calvin and Gladys (Doan) Steury.
Tom earned numerous awards and broke several records for his exemplary performance in track and cross country at Amherst Marion L. Steele High School and Bowling Green State University, where he earned a degree in psychology. He broke the high school record with a 1-mile race time of 4:27.4 in 1962.
After graduating from college, Tom worked as a social worker for the Lorain County Welfare Department and as a cost accountant for Lorain Products in Lorain, Ohio. He was also vice president of Long-Range Planning at the Flxible Corporation in Loudonville and retired as a stockbroker from Stifel Nicolaus Investments in Mansfield in 2017.
Tom and his family moved to Mount Vernon in 1976, and he was highly active in the Gay Street United Methodist Church, the Knox County Republican Party, the Mount Vernon Players, and the Mansfield and Loudonville-Perrysville local schools as a reading volunteer. Tom made many financial contributions to nonprofit organizations close to his heart.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon Daniel Steury; daughters, Lisa Steury of Naples, Florida, and Elizabeth (Matthew) Scheffler of Delaware, Ohio; five grandchildren, Vincent, Joseph, Calvin, Simon and Vivienne; brothers, Steven (Ellen) Steury of Washington, D.C. and David (Suzanne) Steury of Ashland; sister, Jane (Dennis) Traster of Avon Lake; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 1, 2021, at the Gay Street United Methodist Church, 18 North Gay St., Mount Vernon, OH 43050; followed by a luncheon. Guests are encouraged to wear the color blue, as blue was one of Tom’s favorite colors.
A private burial at the Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Columbus will take place at a later date.
In the spirit of celebrating Tom, the Rastin Tower and downtown bridges in Mount Vernon will be lit in the color blue between April 27 and May 4.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gay Street United Methodist Church “Organ Fund Project.”
