MOUNT VERNON – Ruth May Lyness McBride, 89, of Mount Vernon, passed away on Saturday, April 17, 2021, at Whispering Hills Care Center in Mount Vernon. She was born on December 20, 1931, in Pittsburgh to the late George S. and Sarah J. (Jones) Lyness.
Ruth graduated from Schenley High School in 1950. She was an active member of the Knox Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Mount Vernon. She was a Sunday School teacher and a children’s church leader at Christian Missionary Alliance Church in Mount Vernon. Ruth was also on the Knox County Right to Life Board. She volunteered with South Vernon Baseball Park concessions and the Junior Olympics for the former Elmwood Elementary School. She was a devoted mother of five children.
She is survived by her husband of over 66 years, John N. McBride, whom she married on July 24, 1954; sons, Donald (Patricia) McBride of Epsom, New Hampshire, William (Carina) McBride of Colorado Springs, Colorado, John (Linda) McBride of Houston and Gregg McBride of Mount Vernon; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers, Dr. Sam (Joy) Lyness of West Grove, Pennsylvania, and George Lyness of Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by a daughter, Beverly J. Fowler; granddaughter, Holly C. Fowler; sister, June Lyness Nugent; and a sister-in-law, Dolly Lyness.
The family will receive friends from 1–3 p.m. on Sunday, April 25, at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road in Mount Vernon, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 26, with Pastor Jeremy Logan officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
