Softball roundup: Cook, Radermacher lead Jackets to victory

Layne Cook had five hits and Brooke Radermacher homered twice to lead Mount Vernon to a comfortable 18-5 win at Wooster in Ohio Cardinal Conference play on Wednesday, April 14.

Cook went 5-for-5 with a triple, five RBIs and three runs. Her two-run single in the third inning gave the Yellow Jackets (9-1, 6-0) all the runs they needed with a 6-1 lead.

Radermacher hit a solo home run in the first inning and added a two-run shot in the seventh.

Highland 15, Galion 0 (5)

Audrey Robinson hit two two-run doubles as part of an 11-run first inning, and Highland rolled to a 15-0 win in five innings over Galion in non-league play on Thursday, April 15, in Sparta.

Robinson finished with five RBIs for the game, and Savannah Fitzpatrick scored four runs for the Fighting Scots.

Emma West also hit a two-run double in the first inning. She got the win in the circle, allowing two hits with three strikeouts over five innings for Highland.

Centerburg 13, Centennial 3 (6)

Savannah Dehart drove in three runs and tossed a complete game in the circle to lead host Centerburg to a 13-3 victory in six innings over Centennial in non-league play on Thursday, April 15.

Dehart had two hits, three RBIs and two runs; and Allie Beekman added a two-run homer to lead the Trojans on offense. Dehart struck out seven and allowed three earned runs on five hits and two walks over six innings to get the win.

Highland 3, Fredericktown 0

Stevie Asher tossed a three-hit shutout to lead Highland to a 3-0 victory over Fredericktown in Knox Morrow Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, April 14, in Sparta.

Asher struck out five batters and didn’t issue a walk in seven innings of work for the Scots (12-3, 3-2).

Faith Geiger led off the second inning with a double and later scored on a passed ball to give Highland all the runs it needed. But Guinivere Jackson hit a two-run home run in the fifth for insurance.

Miranda Payne was solid in the circle for the Freddies. She allowed three earned runs on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts but took the loss.

Centerburg 11, Mount Gilead 10

Eight wasn’t enough for Mount Gilead.

Beekman drove in four runs to lead Centerburg, which came back from eight runs down in the first inning to beat host Mount Gilead 11-10 in KMAC play on Wednesday, April 14.

Beekman hit a two-run homer in the third inning to pull the Trojans (5-5, 3-2) within two. She added an RBI groundout in the fourth to give Centerburg the lead.

Dehart had three hits and scored three runs while also picking up the win in the circle for Centerburg.

Shelby Morris tossed two flawless innings to notch the save.

Utica 3, Zanesville 1

Kayleigh Crowe’s two-run single and Karleigh Lees’ complete game led host Utica to a 3-1 victory over Zanesville in Licking County League play on Wednesday, April 12, at South End Park.

Zanesville touched up Lees for an unearned run in the first inning. She shut down the Blue Devils the rest of the way, allowing three hits and two walks with six strikeouts overall to get the win.

Crowe’s big hit came in the bottom half of the first inning, and Carlie Parsons hit a triple in the third inning and scored on Leah Swetnam’s sacrifice fly to account for the third run. Parsons had three hits in the game, including two triples, to lead Utica (6-8, 3-2).

Mount Vernon 16, Wooster 3 (5)

Mollie Pentz drove in four runs to lead host Mount Vernon to a 16-3 win in five innings over the Generals on Tuesday, April 13.

Pentz had three hits and scored three runs, Carlena Fiorilli had three hits — including a double and a triple — and scored three runs, and Radermacher and Cook each had two hits and three RBIs to lead the Jackets. Radermacher had two doubles.

Cardington 2, Highland 1

Cardington scored two runs on Friday, April 9, and it stood up when play resumed on Tuesday, April 13. The Pirates scored two in the first inning and that was all they needed in a 2-1 win over visiting Highland in KMAC play.

Riley Burchett and Hailee Edgell had RBI singles in the first inning to give Cardington the lead. Genevieve Longsdorf made it stand, allowing one earned run on three hits and two walks with eight strikeouts over seven innings to notch the win for the Pirates (9-0, 6-0).

Asher was solid after the rocky first. All told, she allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks while striking out six in a complete-game six innings but took the loss. She also cracked a solo home run in the sixth inning to account for the Scots’ scoring.

Loudonville 13, Utica 3 (5)

Host Loudonville put up a four-spot in the first inning and cruised to a 13-3 win in five innings over Utica in non-league play on Tuesday, April 13.

Cass Fouty had two hits, including a solo home run, and scored twice to pace Utica.

Emma Carney went 4-for-4, drove in three runs and scored twice for the Redbirds.
