MOUNT VERNON – Barbara M. Dougherty, 84, of Mount Vernon, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, April 8, 2021. She was born March 22, 1937, in Danville, to Roland and Frances (Condon) Sapp.

Barb grew up on her family farm in Danville, where she learned how to live off the land and developed many life skills that helped her family sustain their loving but modest lifestyle. These experiences contributed to her strong work ethic and led to her appreciation of the simple things in life. Barb was a graduate of Danville High School and a longtime, loyal employee of G.R. Smith Hardware in Mount Vernon.

In addition to being a proud mother and grandmother, Barb was passionate about baking and bird-watching, and she was a loving mom to many cats and dogs over the years. She was also an avid bridge, euchre and pinochle card player, treasuring the many long-lasting friendships she maintained. She always looked forward to meeting with her special friends from her Bible study group.

She is survived by her daughters, Margaret Wolford of Mount Vernon and Marilyn (Jerry) Mazik of Newark; a granddaughter, Megan Mazik; sisters, Ruth Riley and Sarah Evans; and brother, Paul Sapp (Beth).

Besides her parents, Barb was preceded in death by her loving husband, William C. “Bill" Dougherty on Sept. 10, 2003; a daughter, Dianne Dougherty; sisters, Grace Temple and Carrie Piar; and brothers, Robert, Bernard, Owen and Richard Sapp.

A special thank you to Capital City Hospice and Country Club Retirement Center for their compassionate care.

Although she was loved by many, a private service to celebrate Barb’s wonderful life will be limited to immediate family members.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Knox County Humane Society, 400 Columbus Road, Mount Vernon, OH 43050.
