Softball roundup: Jackets roll over Tygers in OCC play

Three pitchers combined on a no-hitter to help the Mount Vernon softball team complete a dominating sweep with a 22-0 victory in five innings over Mansfield Senior in Ohio Cardinal Conference play on Wednesday, April 7, in Mansfield.

The win came a day after the Yellow Jackets beat the Tygers 22-0 in three innings in Mount Vernon.

On Wednesday, Emma Jones (two innings), Rhyli Pope (two innings) and Mackenzie Rine (one inning) didn’t allow a hit. Jones struck out six and allowed just one walk, Pope had five punchouts and Rine struck out the side in her inning to finish off the no-no.

Rae Straight was a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles, three runs and two RBIs; and Maddy Burdette had two hits — one a three-run homer as part of a 12-run first inning. Burdette scored two runs and six others had multiple hits in the game as well.

Patience was the key to Mount Vernon’s win on Tuesday. Layne Cook had two hits, two runs and two RBIs as the Jackets worked 16 walks.

Jones and Mackenzie Rine combined for a no-hitter, with Rine striking out five batters over her two innings of work.

Devils sweep MG

Maddy Wine drove in 14 runs over a two-game stretch to help Danville sweep Mount Gilead in Knox Morrow Athletic Conference play.

Wine was 4-for-5 with three doubles, eight RBIs and two runs scored as the Blue Devils routed host Mount Gilead 28-1 in five innings on Wednesday, April 7.

Wine was a perfect 3-for-3 with a double and six RBIs in Danville’s 20-2 win over visiting MG on Monday, April 5. She also got the win in the circle, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk with eight strikeouts in the five-inning, complete-game performance.

Grace Gronberg went the complete five innings on Wednesday, allowing one unearned run with 11 strikeouts to notch the win.

Gronberg and Emily Weckesser each played long ball for the Devils. Gronberg led off the second inning with a deep fly and Weckesser came through with a three-run shot later in the frame as Danville scored 15 runs to put it away.

Trojans take two

Shelby Morris’ two-run single in the sixth inning put Centerburg up for good in an 8-7 win at Danville in KMAC play on Thursday, April 8.

Makenna Martindale drove home Savannah Dehart in the seventh inning, which turned out to be the winning run after the Devils rallied in the bottom half of the inning.

Dehart had two hits including a home run, drove in two runs and scored twice to pace the Trojans (3-2, 2-1) on offense.

Wine went the distance for the Devils (5-1, 2-1), allowing just two earned runs over seven innings of work. She also led Danville at the plate with two hits, including a double, and two RBIs.

Centerburg bounced back from a loss to Northmor in its KMAC opener to knock off the host Golden Knights 5-2 on Wednesday, April 7, in Galion.

Amelia Smith hit a solo home run in the third inning to give the Trojans a 2-1 lead. Later in the inning, Allie Beekman hit a two-run shot to give Centerburg all the runs it needed.

Smith had three hits on the day and Beekman had two. Dehart (four innings) and Morris (three innings) combined in the circle for Centerburg.

Utica bounces back

Ryleigh Lees went the distance to help Utica hold off host Newark 4-3 in non-league play on Thursday, April 8.

Lees allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk with four strikeouts in a complete game for Utica, which bounced back after falling to Granville 14-4 in Licking County League play on Tuesday, April 6.

Cass Fouty led Utica (4-4, 1-1) with two hits and two RBIs in the win over the Wildcats.

Fouty and Lexi Weigand homered in the loss to the Blue Aces.

Cardington 6, Fredericktown 5

Fredericktown rallied for four runs in the sixth inning but fell short in a 6-5 loss at Cardington in KMAC play on Wednesday, April 7.

Taylor Overholt and Sydney Sansom had two hits each, and Alyssa Perkins drove in a pair of runs to pace the Freddies (2-4, 0-2), who trailed 6-1 heading into the sixth.

Emalee Artz had three hits, including a homer and a triple, to lead the Pirates. She also scored twice and drove in two runs.

Highland 8, East Knox 5

Audrey Robinson’s RBI single in the fourth inning put Highland up for good in an 8-5 win at East Knox in KMAC play on Wednesday, April 8, in Howard.

Savannah Fitzpatrick and Faith Geiger led the Fighting Scots (5-0, 2-0) with three hits and two runs each. Geiger also drove in a run and Robinson finished with two RBIs. Stevie Asher got the win in the circle, tossing a complete game for Highland.

Natalie Smith had two hits including a solo home run, two runs and two RBIs; and Cami Bailey, who took the loss for the Bulldogs (0-6, 0-2), had two hits and two RBIs.
