Baseball roundup: MG rallies past Danville in KMAC play

Tyler McKinney’s two-run single capped a six-run third that gave host Mount Gilead control on its way to a 9-6 win over Danville in Knox Morrow Athletic Conference action on Wednesday, April 7.

Carter Kennon, who got the win on the mound, went a perfect 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI; and Paul Butterman added two hits, two RBIs and a run to lead MG.

Wyatt Weckesser drove in two runs on two hits and scored once to lead the Blue Devils (0-5, 0-2), who jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning but couldn’t hold on.

Jackets sweep Tygers

Host Mount Vernon scored nine runs in the third inning to climb out of an early 5-0 hole. A five-run fourth inning all but put away a 15-5 victory in five innings over Mansfield Senior in Ohio Cardinal Conference play on Tuesday, April 6.

Marcus Bradley (three innings) and Zach Mullins (two innings) combined for a one-hit shutout in a 17-0 win in five innings over the Tygers on Wednesday, April 7, in Mansfield.

Owynn Gleason, Logan Trace and Caden Rowland each had three hits to lead the Yellow Jackets, who pounded out 18 hits as a team in Wednesday’s win. Gleason doubled twice and scored three runs, Trace drove in three runs and scored twice, and Rowland had three RBIs.

Trace hit a two-run double to put MV in front for good in the second inning of Tuesday’s game. Bradley finished with three hits, three runs and an RBI to lead the Jackets (6-1, 4-0).

Fredericktown 14, Cardington 3

Fredericktown jumped out to a 5-0 lead after one inning and never trailed, defeating host Cardington 14-3 in five innings in KMAC play on Wednesday, April 7.

Ty Hatfield and Caleb Sheriff had three hits apiece to lead the Freddies (4-1, 2-0). Hatfield drove in two runs and scored twice, and Sheriff had three RBIs and scored once.

Luke Currier (2 2/3 innings) got the win, but Luke Bean (2 1/3 innings) was solid in relief.

Dillon Minturn drove in two runs but also took the loss for the Pirates.

Northmor 14, Centerburg 9

Joe Tepper and Trey Kendrick each played long ball for Centerburg, but host Northmor scored five runs in the fifth inning to win the slugfest, 14-9, in KMAC play on Wednesday, April 7, in Galion.

Garrett Corwin scored on an error to give the Golden Knights the lead in the second inning.

But the fifth inning ended up being the difference. Grant Bentley and Corwin each drove in a run with back-to-back singles, and Andrew Armrose worked a bases-loaded walk. The Knights got two runs on an error to cap the big frame.

Kendrick hit a two-run homer in the first inning, and Tepper added a three-run shot in the second for the Trojans.

Tepper finished with two hits and four RBIs; Brock Hurtt had two hits, three RBIs and two runs; and Dakota Baer added three hits and two runs for Centerburg.

Bentley had two hits, and he and Armrose each drove in three runs and scored twice to lead Northmor.

Worthington Christian 7, Utica 2

David Murawski hit a three-run double as part of a four-run third inning, and Worthington Christian cruised to a 7-2 win over Utica in non-league play on Wednesday, April 7.

Josh Dillon had two hits to pace Utica (2-3) in the setback.
