MOUNT VERNON – Fast Eddy’s Grounds Maintenance offers beautiful lawns — and also peace of mind, general manager Chris Hurlow said.

“There’s something to be said about having a busy home, work, children, ball games all summer, and knowing that your yard will to get mowed every Tuesday,” he said. “You don’t have to worry about it. Once it is scheduled, you don’t even have to think about it for the rest of the year.”

Even paying the bill is stress-free, with the company’s online payment system.

Any questions about service can also be handled online.

“Our website is totally interactive,” Hurlow said. “When the customers gets home from work at  6 o’clock and they have a question or they notice something in the lawn, you can contact us on our website. That will send an email to my desk. We will answer that first thing in the morning and answer your question via email or phone call.”

Most customers contract with the company to provide services the entire year, but that is not required.

“Some people may go on vacation every year in June, and they know they can call us and get them on the schedule,” Hurlow said.

The company is approximately 25 years old, and a lot of knowledge has accumulated among the staff during that time.

Many homeowners make the mistake of cutting their grass too short, Hurlow noted.

“Consistently mowing the grass too short causes too much sunlight to the soil, which thins the grass and stresses it,” he said.

Another mistake is mowing with dull mower blades.

“That’s a very common thing which stresses the lawn so that the grass blade actually spends a little bit of energy trying to seal off the frayed edges of a grass blade instead of using the energy to continue to grow and stay green,” Hurlow said. “Generally, the tips of the grass blades become very brown.”

Yet another problem is bagging grass clippings.

“The nutrients in the grass clippings break back down into the ground,” Hurlow said. “That helps tremendously. Bagging on a regular basis is probably one of the biggest problems we see.”
