MOUNT VERNON – Individual tax returns will be due on May 17 for the state of Ohio and the city of Mount Vernon, which mirrors the federal income tax return deadline extension.

But Mayor Matt Starr stated that the City’s Income Tax office confirmed business tax returns remain due on April 15. The April 15 date also applies to individuals who file quarterly estimated taxes.

Parks

Restrooms at the Schnormeier Event Center at Ariel-Foundation Park are ready to open. Starr said that restrooms at all city parks will be ready to open by April.

The entire event center has been cleaned out, with a wedding already scheduled. Proceeds from wedding fees go to the Ariel Foundation Park Conservancy.

A few more sunscreens were added for the Memorial Park tennis courts, and sunscreens were installed at the pickleball courts at Riverside Park.

Streets

The Streets Department continues to grade alleys throughout the city.

“We’ve also been doing some spot-checking and repairs to our road berms to make sure that those are safe, and if people need to pull off to the side, those berms are in good shape,” Starr said.

In the wake of some water digs on brick streets, crews have been making brick repairs.

Street sweeping continues, with the schedule posted on the City’s Facebook page.

Engineering

The City finished work toward seeking an Ohio Department of Transportation grant to fund work on relocating State Route 13 from the viaduct and outside of downtown. With a second grant application, Mount Vernon is seeking $10 million for the project.

Public Buildings and Lands

The work to replace lights at City Hall with LED lighting is complete, with crews finishing up at the Water Billing and Tax Office building. The lighting increase is noticeable. Starr said that they expect cost savings.

Some trash cans were put out in the cemetery so families can clean up their gravesites. After April 1, cemetery staff will remove remaining items so they can safely mow and trim in the cemetery.
