MOUNT VERNON – Marcy Rinehart, manager of Mount Vernon Nazarene University radio station WNZR, says she realizes few songs are a better fit for this year's pledge drive than Jeremy Camp's "Keep Me in the Moment."
"It is so easy to keep looking back, reliving the struggles of the past," Rinehart, co-host of the station's morning show, said in a press release. "This song from Jeremy Camp describes the challenge that we have of staying in the present and being prepared for the lessons and blessings that God has for us right now, today."
For 34 years, WNZR has broadcast contemporary Christian music, family-oriented programs, sports, news and weather 24 hours a day. This year, the station will hold Lifeline 2021, its annual fundraising drive, March 24-29, with a $65,000 goal to enable the station's outreach and community support. The Bible verses Ephesians 5:15-16 summarize the station's rallying cry this year.
"Our mission at WNZR is to be a lifeline to our listeners today — right now in this moment," Rinehart explained. "We want to provide hope and encouragement in the music we play. We want to share steps to strengthen relationships in the programs and messages that we share. Most importantly, we want to lead our listeners to a deeper relationship with Christ."
Joe Rinehart, MVNU's director of broadcasting and co-host of the afternoon show, said the station is grateful for the support it has received during the pandemic.
"This crisis has helped us stay focused on what we're all about: broadcasting an uplifting message that encourages listeners and families on a daily basis," he said. "Your gift allows us to continue that effort. Your partnership is also an investment in our students to develop their communication skills and discover purpose in their lives."
At least two students can attest to the station's value as a campus and community ministry.
Grant Hauger, a digital media major from Danville, said the Jeremy Camp song helps him count his blessings.
"Even though these are trying times, we can still celebrate and praise every moment with which we have been blessed," Hauger stated in the release.
Wes McClellan, a student from Kettering, said the song echoes his faith walk during the pandemic.
"During the pandemic, I have been having massive anxiety about the future," the senior graphic design major said. "But God has been teaching me a lot about taking things day to day, enjoying the moments we tangibly experience as they arrive instead of losing sleep over what is yet to come. That is what 'Keep Me in the Moment' means to me."
