The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team ran into a buzzsaw, falling in four consecutive games at Indiana Wesleyan in Crossroads League play over the weekend.
IWU plated three runs in the first inning and never trailed in an 11-2 win over the Cougars on Saturday, March 13, in Marion, Indiana.
MVNU scored three runs in the third inning in the second game, but fell 4-3 on a walk-off single by Colby Jenkins.
The Wildcats (16-7, 8-0) beat the Cougars by identical 9-2 scores in a pair of games on Friday, March 12, in Marion, Indiana.
Jake Glover was a bright spot for the Cougars (6-7, 1-7) with five hits, including a home run and a double. He drove in four runs, walked once and was hit by a pitch over the four-game set.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Spencer Stanley put together a line of 15 kills, five digs and four blocks, but MVNU fell in a non-conference match at Campbellsville 25-22, 28-30, 25-22, 25-17 on Friday, March 12.
Stanley’s effort earned him Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Attacker of the Week.
Jaysen Matsumoto had 41 assists and 11 digs, Landon Ewers had 11 kills and five blocks, and Caden Donaldson added nine kills and five digs for the Cougars (7-7).
Ho Yin Leung had 25 kills, Rafael Cruz had 18 kills and Isaac Paches had 14 kills to pace the Tigers (16-3).
Jeremy Hernandez dished out 34 assists, Ryan Smith had 28 helpers, Jay Montalvo had 11 digs and Jose Viera Cerame had 10 digs for Campbellsville.
MEN’S TENNIS
Danny Mayotte, Justin Haggard and Logan Gauthier each scored singles and doubles victories for host MVNU in a 7-0 win over Ohio Christian in non-conference play on Saturday, March 13.
But both the Cougars’ men’s and women’s teams ran into trouble two days later, falling by identical 7-0 scores at the Indiana Institute of Technology in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on Monday, March 15.
BOWLING
Both the MVNU men’s and women’s bowling teams placed seventh in the final Ohio Bowling Conference tournament of the regular season at Sawmill Lanes in Columbus.
The men’s team rolled a 3,841 to finish behind Northwestern (Ohio), which won with a 5,127 in the seven-team tournament.
The women’s team was seventh out of eight teams with a 3,356, behind winner Northwestern (4,511).
