GAMBIER – The Kenyon Review, a literary journal published by Kenyon College, has received a $10,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the Ohio Arts Council announced in a press release on Feb. 4.

The federal funding is part of a $650,000 endowment distributed to 29 Ohio arts organizations through the NEA's Grants for Arts Projects program, which range from $10,000 to $50,000, to support arts programs and initiatives throughout the state. Additionally, three Ohio poets received $25,000 Creative Writing Fellowships.

Building on a tradition of excellence dating back to 1939, the Kenyon Review has evolved from a distinguished literary magazine to a preeminent arts organization. Today, the Kenyon Review is devoted to nurturing, publishing and celebrating the best in contemporary writing. It is expanding the community of diverse readers and writers across the globe, at every stage of their lives.

Background on NEA grants

Arts Projects, the NEA's principal grants program for organizations, provides project-based funding to support "public engagement with, and access to, various forms of art across the nation; the creation of excellent art; learning in the arts at all stages of life; and the integration of the arts into the fabric of community life," the NEA website states.

In this first round of federal FY 2021 funding, 1,073 Arts Projects grants totaling nearly $25 million were awarded to organizations across the United States, the NEA release said.

The three Ohio recipients of the NEA Creative Writing Fellowships are among 35 artists selected for the award this year.

"These FY 2021 fellowships are in poetry and enable the recipients to set aside time for writing, research, travel and general career advancement," the release said.

The release also reported that the NEA awards for the first round of federal FY 2021 total $27,562,040 and span 14 artistic disciplines.

The NEA is currently accepting applications for the next round of its Grants for Arts Projects program. The application deadline for Arts Projects is Feb. 11, 2021.

The next cycle for NEA Literature Fellowships will focus on creative writing in prose (fiction and non-fiction). Applications for this program are due by March 10, 2021.
