MOUNT VERNON – Betty L. George, 93, passed away peacefully on Jan. 30, 2021, at Mount Vernon’s Country Club Retirement Campus. She was the daughter of John Washington McGibeny and Mary Cochran McGibeny.
Betty was a retired employee of the J. S. Ringwalt Co., where she managed the jewelry counter. Betty was a graduate of Mount Vernon High School, Class of 1945, where she delighted in playing the clarinet in its marching band. During World War II, she made gas masks for the allies’ war effort.
By nature sweet and kind, Betty was a great mother and a wonderfully compassionate person who loved animals and never met a stranger.
She is survived by her son (upon whom she lovingly doted), Stephen Charles George and his husband Jeffrey T. Gatwood. Also surviving her are several nieces and nephews, as well as two special friends, Leslie Shutt and her beloved cousin Shirley Slaughter.
Betty’s husband, Charles F. George, predeceased her in 1988.
Special thanks to her hospice caregivers, particularly Sharon Hankins, Monica Osborn and Blair Hance; as well as the excellent and warmhearted staff at Country Club Retirement Center.
A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church after the COVID crisis passes.
