COLUMBUS – Heaven gained an angel. David L. Gates, 63, of Columbus, went to be with the Lord, surrounded by his family.

He was born on Jan. 8, 1958, in Mount Vernon, son of the late Lyman L Gates and Dorothy (Strickland) Gates. Dave grew up in Mount Liberty, also known as the Fun Capital of the World by local residents. He attended the Mount Vernon JVS and graduated from Centerburg High School in 1976. Afterward, he attended Lincoln Tech in Indiana and became a top diesel mechanic.

Dave enjoyed riding Harley Davidsons and everything auto. He was either riding it, driving it or fixing it. He was a humorous man and loved spending time with his family and friends, and also his dogs.

He is survived by his wife Elena; his sons, Christopher and Eric Gates of Columbus; his sister, Nancy (Chris) Adkins of Marengo; nephew, Ryan Adkins of Marengo; aunt, Linda Gates of Mount Vernon; and cousins, Claude Gates of Mount Vernon, Tammy (Fred) Faucett of Mount Vernon, Jim Gates of Mount Vernon and Sharlena Biron.

In addition to his parents and grandparents, Dave was preceded in death by his Uncle “Ace” Adrian Gates. 

A Visitation will be held on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2021, from 3-5 p.m., with a funeral service immediately following at Newcomer Funeral Home-NE Chapel; 3047 East Dublin Granville Road; Columbus, OH 43231.
