MOUNT VERNON – Wm. (Bill) H. Tyson Jr. was born on Aug. 31, 1935, to William H. Tyson Sr. and Marjorie (Hughes) Tyson in Monroe, Michigan, and retired from Rolls-Royce in 2001.

Bill was a graduate of Mount Vernon High School and a 1958 graduate of The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He served in the National Guard for six years. Bill played football, track and baseball for the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets. He was a member of the Ohio State bowling team and freshman track and lacrosse teams. He also played semi-pro football for the Newark Rams. Additionally, he was an avid softball player and golfer.

Bill was a registered high school football official (Ohio High School Athletic Association) since 1961 and completed over 54 years of service. He was a member of the Kokosing Valley Football Association. He had been a registered basketball official as well. He served in the Mount Vernon Booster Club and also served as secretary and treasurer for the Cooper Bessemer scratch bowling league.

Bill was associated with the First Presbyterian Church in Mount Vernon since 1948 and served as a trustee and treasurer for 13 years. He played in the YMCA church basketball and softball leagues. He also served as treasurer for the Red Cross, a trustee for Mount Zion Cemetery and on the CES Credit Union board of trustees. He served on the board of directors of the Knox County Symphony for 20 years.

He is survived by his children, William H. (Karin) Tyson III and Linda Hatton; four grandchildren, Jeff (Carina) Hatton, Jennifer Hatton, Shawn (Chrissy) Hatton and Avery Tyson; six great-grandchildren, Austyn, Cayleigh, Brookelyn, Christian, Isabel and Carson Hatton; a sister, Mary Fleming; and several nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Tyson; and a grandson, Griffen Tyson.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, Jan. 15, from 5-7 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home; 201 Newark Road; Mount Vernon, OH 43050. A private family burial will take place in Mount Zion Cemetery near Gambier.
