Mount Vernon Nazarene University senior forward Taylor Gregory was named Crossroads League Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week, the conference announced on Monday, Dec. 21.
Gregory averaged 21.0 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game in three games last week. The Cougars (3-5) went 2-1, with victories over Rio Grande on Dec. 15 and Indiana University East on Dec. 17 before falling at Asbury on Dec. 18.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Gabby Daniels went for 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead Fredericktown to a 50-35 victory over visiting Northmor in Knox Morrow Athletic Conference play on Saturday, Dec. 19.
Daniels scored nine points in the first quarter to help the Freddies (5-3, 2-2) — who won their third straight game — jump out to an 11-5 lead, and they added on from there.
Grace Sipes, Summer Weller and Jacklyn Nussbaum scored six points apiece. Nussbaum had five rebounds, four assists and four steals; and Taylor Overholt added seven steals, six assists and four rebounds for Fredericktown.
Lexi Wenger scored 12 points to lead the Golden Knights (1-8, 0-6), who trailed 23-14 at the break and 36-21 through three quarters.
Fredericktown 68, Marion Elgin 20
The Freddies outscored visiting Elgin 35-5 in the middle two quarters and cruised to a 68-20 win in non-league play on Monday, Dec. 21.
Summer Weller hit four 3-pointers and scored 16 points to lead Fredericktown. Jacklyn Nussbaum backed Weller with 13 points, Audrey Bouton added 12 points and Gabby Daniels chipped in 10 points.
Molly Hafer led the Comets (0-8) with seven points.
Zanesville Maysville 60, East Knox 27
Host East Knox couldn’t solve Maysville’s stingy defense over the final three quarters. The Panthers held the Bulldogs to just 17 points during that span and rolled to a 60-27 win in non-league play on Monday, Dec. 21.
Bailee Smith tallied a game-high 21 points and Averee Vaughn added 12 points to lead Maysville (3-1).
Shanda Melick and Laura Keith led the Bulldogs with seven points apiece.
Worthington Christian 60, Centerburg 27
Katherine Weakley went for 28 points to lead Worthington Christian (6-1) by host Centerburg 60-27 in non-league play on Monday, Dec. 21.
Rebecca Scholl and Chloe Goulter scored seven points apiece for the Trojans.
East Knox 36, Mount Gilead 35
East Knox made just enough free throws down the stretch to hold off visiting Mount Gilead 36-35 in KMAC play on Saturday, Dec. 19, in Howard.
The Bulldogs (4-4, 4-1), who were led by Laura Keith with 13 points and Shanda Melick with 12 points, took a 23-20 lead into the locker room after being knotted up at 8 after one quarter.
MG (6-3, 3-3), which was led by Holly Gompf’s game-high 14 points, closed the gap to 29-27 at the end of three but couldn’t get over the hump in the fourth. East Knox made 4 of 7 free throws in the fourth quarter to keep control.
Cardington-Lincoln 51, Centerburg 37
Cardington held off a late rally by host Centerburg to win a 51-37 KMAC game on Saturday, Dec. 19.
The Trojans (3-6, 2-4), who trailed 24-9 after one quarter, whittled the deficit down to six in the final three minutes but could get no closer.
Beth Hardwick had 14 points and Mikayla Linkous tallied 10 points to lead the Pirates (6-0, 5-0).
Clara Johnson had 12 points, Rebecca Scholl added nine points and Chloe Goulter chipped in eight points for Centerburg.
Danville 90, Granville Christian 29
Brooklyn Hess did a little bit of everything to lead Danville to a 90-29 win over Granville Christian in non-league play on Saturday, Dec. 19, in Danville. Hess went for 17 points, eight assists, five steals, four rebounds and three blocks to lead the Blue Devils (7-0).
The only thing she didn’t do was lead Danville in scoring. That was left for Ella Proper, who poured in 27 points and added five rebounds and four steals.
Jaylyn Smith chipped in 11 points; Broegan Staats had nine points; Alenah Boeshart had eight points, five assists and four steals; and Jaylyn Workman pulled down five rebounds and had four thefts for Danville, which built a 63-8 lead at the break.
Darynne Zeller led the Lions (0-6) with 13 points.
