Roundup: Hatfield's big night helps Freddies cruise

Ty Hatfield went for 31 points on 12-of-14 shooting to lead the Fredericktown boys basketball team to a 77-37 win over Mount Gilead in Knox Morrow Athletic Conference action on Friday, Dec. 19, in Mount Gilead.

Lincoln Cunningham and Kaid Carpenter added 18 points apiece for the Freddies, who jumped out to a 20-3 lead after one quarter.

Elijah Chafin had 18 points to lead MG, which pulled to within 30-15 at the break before Fredericktown blew it open with a 47-22 second half.

Wooster 68, Mount Vernon 36

Host Wooster came out strong with a 22-7 first quarter and added on with a big second half to roll to a 68-36 win over Mount Vernon in Ohio Cardinal Conference play on Friday, Dec. 18, in Wooster.

David Nolen went for 20 points, Ethan Hahn added 12 points and Drew Dossi chipped in nine points to lead the Generals (2-0, 2-0).

Blake Meyer led the Yellow Jackets (0-5, 0-3) with 12 points and Dayne Burgess had eight points.

Centerburg 63, Highland 42

Carter Jones scored a steady 25 points to lead Centerburg to a 63-42 win over host Highland in KMAC play on Friday, Dec. 18, in Sparta.

Levi Houck had 14 points and Mckinnon Mead added 10 points for the Trojans, who created distance with a 37-23 second half.

Brock Church was solid for the Scots, who played to a 13-13 tie after one quarter. He had 19 points on the strength of six 3-pointers, while Jordan Bellamy added 10 points.

BOYS BOWLING

Tre Flowers and Trevor Ball both broke 200, but host Mount Vernon couldn’t keep up with Big Walnut in a 2,223-2,077 loss in non-league play on Friday, Dec. 18, at Colonial City Lanes in Mount Vernon.

Flowers rolled a team-best 216 and led the Yellow Jackets with a 386 series, and Ball was close behind with a 207 game and 366 series. Bryce Henson also rolled a solid 350 series for MV in the setback.

Connor Tracy rolled a game-high 268 and series-high 451 to lead the Golden Eagles. Tyler Lewis (214) and Aidan Furukawa (210) also broke 200 and finished with 403 and 366 series, respectively.

GIRLS BOWLING

Jace Kyle rolled a 336 series and Chelsea King was close behind with a 311 series, but host Mount Vernon fell short to Big Walnut, losing 1,974-1,750 in non-league action on Friday, Dec. 18, at Colonial Lanes in Mount Vernon.

Ashleigh Westervelt rolled a game-high 236 and a series-high 419 to lead the Golden Eagles.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Utica got off to a strong start and had a 32-29 lead at the break. But visiting Lakewood caught fire in the second half and rolled to a 65-53 win in Licking County League play on Friday, Dec. 18, in Utica.

Shawna Blake scored 26 points and Skylar Parker added 10 points to lead Utica (1-7, 0-5).

Alexa Cummons and Camryn Martindale went for 18 points each, and Eva Porta chipped in 12 points to lead the Lancers (1-3, 1-3).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Mount Vernon Nazarene University used a 15-5 run to whittle an 11-point deficit at the end of three down to just one midway through the fourth quarter.

But host Asbury pulled away for an 83-76 win over the Cougars in non-conference play on Friday, Dec. 18, in Wilmore, Ky.

Rylee Pireu led the Cougars (3-5) with 20 points, and Taylor Gregory and Lily Krieger both turned in double-double performances. Gregory had 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Krieger went for 10 points and 10 boards.

Maggie Coblentz had another solid day off the bench for MVNU with 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Faith Osborne had 17 points and five rebounds; Jaclynn Ruble went for 16 points and five assists; and Zaria Napier had 13 points, four rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists to lead the Eagles (5-2).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Shawnee State’s EJ Onu proved to be too much to handle for MVNU. The senior went for 15 points, 19 rebounds and a pair of blocks to lead the host Bears over the Cougars 82-62 in non-conference play on Friday, Dec. 18, in Portsmouth.

James Jones had 19 points, six rebounds and three assists; and Miles Thomas came off the bench to add 14 points and seven rebounds for Shawnee State; which outscored MVNU by 14 in the second half after taking a 35-29 lead into the locker room.

Jevon Knox had 13 points, Clay Hilliard added 10 points off the bench and Kyle Kegley had nine rebounds to go with six points to lead the Cougars (2-3).
