MOUNT VERNON – Mary L Haldeman, 92, of Guthrie, Okla., formerly of Mount Vernon, passed away on Dec. 5, 2020. She was born in Mount Vernon to Arthur and Effie Newton Beck.
Mary was an avid traveler (she made it to all 50 states!), stamp collector, Euchre player, crossword puzzle enthusiast and lover of a good time. She bowled in local leagues for over 63 years in addition to serving as secretary for the Knox County Bowling Association for 16 years. At the young age of 14, Mary worked after school for Shellmar Products folding gas capes for the army. She went on to work as an operator for Mount Vernon Telephone Co., and was employed as a secretary for Justice of the Peace Herald Bishop before spending 20 years as secretary for the superintendent of schools.
Mary’s most important job was beloved aunt to nieces Kimberly Beck-Hill and Sondra Sears and nephews Michael Beck and Bill Baker, and countless subsequent generations who adored her as well.
She is survived by an extended family fanned out across many states and friends who will miss her dearly. Her laughter brightened all of our lives.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Haldeman; her parents, Effie and Arthur Beck; and six siblings.
A graveside service will be held at Memorial Gardens on Thursday, Dec. 17, at 1 p.m.
