MOUNT VERNON – Peter Streiber, otherwise known as Hubby, Dad, Papa Pete, Old Man and The Fiddler, went to be with Jesus on Dec. 9, 2020.
Peter was born in Hungary, and when he was just 9 years old, he and his family made an incredible journey to the USA during the Hungarian Revolution. In 1981, he became a naturalized citizen of the United States and was very proud to be an American, because as an immigrant he understood the value of freedom more than most.
If you were blessed to know Peter, then you knew he loved Jesus; he became a follower of Jesus as a teenager. After graduating from Interlochen Academy, he was offered many career opportunities, but Peter chose to follow God’s call and attended Elim Bible College. This is where he met and married the love of his life, Diana; and soon became a proud and loving father to children Angelina and Peter II.
He worked over 40 years in the automotive and tool & die industry, and he also served faithfully as a teacher, leader and musician in church. As many of you know, Peter was a recovering alcoholic; his signature ponytail hairstyle was a daily reminder of his 24 years of sobriety. While in recovery, he found renewed passion and friendship when he joined The AC Brothers Band. Music was the tool God used in his life to comfort, to heal, to renew and to restore — both for others and for himself. In most recent years, you could find Peter playing fiddle and ministering with his beloved bluegrass band, Chestnut Ridge.
Peter was a talented perfectionist who could do anything he put his mind to — tailor, engineer, mechanic, watchmaker, fisherman, and violinist or fiddler, just to name a few. But he will be most remembered for his tender heart and grumpy disposition — sweet and a little bit spicy. He left a strong and beautiful legacy of family, faith and love. He was often able to inspire those around him, offering words of wisdom and encouragement. He will be dearly missed.
He is survived by his loving wife, Diana (Palmer) Streiber; daughter, Angelina (Jay) Maners; son, Peter (Michelle) Streiber II; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Maria Monk and Susannah (Donald) Broughton; and brother, Julius (Sherry) Schwarcz.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 19, at Lasater Funeral Home, 11337 Upper Gilchrist Road in Mount Vernon. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
