Our House

To the Editor:

MOUNT VERNON – Never was there such a divide in a land, never was there a river that epitomized a "house divided" like the Rappahanneck River before the battle of Fredericksburg. The lazy silent Rappahannock River separated a clash of ideals never so much in polar opposition. Sadly, the brave soldiers who died under those cold stars never knew how much more the war would bleed out of the land they fought over.

Fortunately, later, this great land, our land, became an American union no longer divided by the few, but reconciled for and by the many who learned history's hard lesson. Our union became a house united to face an awaiting world.

However, history remembers what mankind often forgets, and land can become just another beachhead again where red blood runs like a river into the sea. So it came to pass America forgot its blessings, forgot its burgeoning military power, and its motivations turned inward and still.

Therefore today, we should be mindful of reasons to be thankful. We are casually thankful for the new day, for the boy who delivers the newspaper; we are usually thankful for a haircut or hair style, the grocer, or the wisdom of the librarian. It seems as much as we are thankful for the many things that fill our day, we often forget to show deep abiding gratitude for the greatest generation of men and women who fought not only a war, but World War II, to keep our backsliding "House" intact.

In conclusion, the passing time is taking the voices of those people who fought in World War II from us one by one; but let us be very kind to these remarkable few who remain. We need to give our most heartfelt "thank you" to them because they fought for and helped rebuild America for us and generations to come.

Thank them one and all, and thank them well!

It's Not Over

To the Editor:

MOUNT VERNON – It's not over till the fat lady sings, and she is just starting to warm up her voice. Be strong, have faith, pray.
