In an effort to extend availability to the citizens of Mount Vernon, the City Council will host a Virtual Coffee with Council. These sessions were started earlier this year to provide opportunities for residents to have face-to-face time with their elected council members. The Teen Writing Program Virtual Generative Workshop partners with Breakbread Literacy for a series of writing workshops for young writers aged 13 to 19 in grades 7-12. It's a generative workshop where participants can meet a guest author and complete a writing prompt. A peer workshop will allow participants to get feedback from the group and will be held each session. Registration is free. Come join Velvet Ice Cream’s Block Party with Newark Rodders' Cruise-in and folk rock artist Barefoot McCoy. A magic show, balloon artist presentation, and the Utica Police Department will be doing a K9 demonstration. Kids and adults can also join the ice-cream-eating contest.

The Mount Vernon Music and Arts Festival invites creative individuals who can develop life-size and ghost-like figures with flowing gowns made from chicken wire to join the Halloween Hootenanny. Knox County will be participating in the National Drug Take Back Day. KSAAT, in partnership with local law enforcement agencies, is pleased to sponsor this collection day for Knox County residents to dispose of their expired, unused or unwanted prescription medications safely. Drop-off locations in Knox County include: Knox County Health Department, Knox Community Hospital Medical Pavilion, Conway's Pharmacy in Danville, Centerburg Foster’s Pharmacy and the Fredericktown Police Department.

Ariel-Foundation Park's Halloween Hootenanny will have local musicians, storytellers, photo opportunities and a scavenger hunt for guests to enjoy. The park is encouraging guests to stagger their arrival times in order to limit crowd size. Last names starting with A-F arrive at 4 p.m., G-M at 4:20 p.m., N-S at 4:40 p.m. and T-Z at 5 p.m. Protective facial masks are required when appropriate social distancing isn't possible. If there is inclement weather, the event will be canceled.

Mount Vernon City Council member Tanner Salyers is bringing “Never Again?” to The Woodward Opera House for a public film screening. “Never Again?” is a feature-length documentary about the horrors of anti-Semitism and the power of survival and redemption. Viewers will go on a journey with a Holocaust survivor into the depths of darkness and surface in the light. Due to COVID-19, masks are required in the building at all times except when eating or drinking. Tickets are $15; seating is limited. The Knox County Park District will hold a drive-by donation drop-off at Wolf Run Regional Park. This event benefits the Knox Animal Shelter and the needs they have for those dogs up for adoption. Donors are asked to bring a box of Milk-Bone Dog Treats or Pedigree Dentastix as a donation to the Dogs of Knox and their partnership with the Knox County Animal Shelter.

Join the Knox County Park District for Pumpkins in the Park at Wolf Run Regional Park. This event will feature carved pumpkins illuminating the Storybook Trail on a fall night hike through the park. The public is invited to attend as well as participate by creating a carved pumpkin relating to a storybook character or book title for the display. To submit an entry, visit the Knox County Park District website at www.knoxcountyparks.org and click on the Events tab. The deadline for entries is Oct. 29. Drop-off for the pumpkins will be Saturday, Oct. 31, from 10 a.m. - noon. On Nov. 1, the public is invited to vote on their favorite pumpkin as the Knox County Park District showcases all pumpkin entries on their Facebook page. Winners will be announced on Nov. 2. Facial coverings and social distancing on the trails will be required during the event.

Come meet some of the Monroe Township Fire Department personnel and enjoy a chicken dinner. The suggested donation is $10 for an adult meal and $5 for a kids' meal. Meals include chicken, potato salad, baked beans, roll and a cookie. Kids, come in your Halloween costume and get a treat bag. Due to COVID-19, we are asking that you stay in your vehicle. We will come to take your order and deliver it to you. All of our personnel will be wearing masks and gloves for your protection and ours. We will be accepting cash and credit/debit card.
