Often, renting a piece of equipment makes more sense than buying, particularly if the price of the machine is $100,000, Nate Beachy, co-owner of Holmes Rental & Sales in Mount Vernon, said.
The company rents a wide array of equipment to customers ranging from do-it-yourself homeowners to construction contractors. On the sales side, the company attracts customers looking for large tractors down to small lawn mowers.
“For a contractor, rental makes a lot of sense,” Beachy told the Mount Vernon News. “There’s no maintenance cost. You have the right equipment for the right job. You can rent the size you need rather than try to make what you own work for the job.
“We also offer delivery service. It’s always delivered to where you need it.”
With renting, you get late-model, well-serviced equipment, Beachy said. And if the equipment breaks, Holmes Rental will repair or replace it. Renting can also have better tax advantages than owning equipment.
Aerial work platforms, which allow workers to reach otherwise inaccessible areas, are a popular rental item for Holmes Rental Service customers, Beachy noted. Excavators and skid-sheer loaders are also hot rental items. If purchased new, some of that equipment could range in price from $40,000 to $100,000. But lawn mowers and tractors for homeowners and hobby farmers are more likely to be purchased than rented.
He added that the company's business has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We’ve had an increase in do-it-yourself projects,” Beachy said.
Whatever equipment the customer wants to either rent or buy, Holmes Rental prides itself on customer service. It's is a family-owned company operated by Beachy and his brother, Nate, and started by their father.
“We have personal relationships with our customers, and we offer the service to support the product, whether rental or sales,” Beachy said. “We offer great product support compared to what you are going to get at big-box retailers.”
There are two other locations in Ohio, one in Millersburg and another in Sugarcreek. The company also offers services such as sharpening chainsaw and lawn-tractor blades; replacing and repairing tires on lawn tractors; and servicing leaf blowers, generators and other equipment.
“One thing we are blessed with is a very loyal customer base,” Beachy said. “Every week, we have new customers coming to us. But really, our core is our very loyal, long-time customers. We really appreciate all of them and our employees. They make a wonderful team.”
