Roundup: Utica golfer Dickson qualifies for district

Utica’s Olivia Dickson qualified for district thanks to a solid 45 on the back nine. Her overall score of 95 was tied with Newark Catholic’s Alli Doehring for 11th out of 52 golfers at a Division II girls golf sectional at Blacklick Woods Golf Course in Reynoldsburg.

Columbus School for Girls (346), Columbus Academy (366) and Newark Catholic (370) were the teams that advanced to the Division II district round at Darby Creek Golf Course in Marysville on Oct. 5.

Fisher Catholic’s Meg Saffell (tied-fifth, 88) also qualified as an individual.

Kate Kramer of Columbus School for Girls shot a 74 to win top honors in the sectional round.

CROSS COUNTRY

Thomas Caputo continued his hot streak with a first-place finish at the Celtic Clash on Sept. 26 in Dublin.

Caputo ran a time of 15:34.05 to finish first out of 100 runners in the Group A race of the Dublin Jerome-hosted meet.

Titus Krabil (sixth, 16:41.07) and Evan France (eighth, 17:05.57) each turned in top-10 performances to help the Freddies (42 points) beat out 10 other teams.

Hunter Bolton (sixth, 16:47.94) and Joel Roberts (ninth, 17:11.19) helped Highland (154) to a fifth-place finish as a team.

Blake Johnson (19th, 17:32.27) led Centerburg to a seventh-place finish.

In the girls race, Fredericktown’s Elsa Hoam ran a 19:40.38 to finish fifth out of 90 runners in the Group A race. Morgan Hicks (18:36.42) of Jonathon Alder won the race.

Hoam’s effort led the Freddies (164) to a sixth-place finish, missing out on fifth to Big Walnut by one point in the 12-team meet. The Pioneers (54) beat out Buckeye Valley by one point as well.

Centerburg’s Abigail Dickhof had a time of 20:04.14 and finished 10th; and Avery Tucker finished 13th with a time of 20:28.01, helping the Trojans to an eight-place finish as a team.

Camberly Schade (20th, 21:14.55) and Mia White (21st, 21:23.85) led the Scots, who finished 11th overall.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Fredericktown played host River Valley tight in the first two sets before it ran out of gas in a 26-24, 27-25, 25-16 loss in non-league play on Sept. 26 in Caledonia.

Lindsey Boeshart had 15 kills, Audrey Bouton had two blocks and assisted on two others, Lainey Partington had 15 digs, Grace Sipes had 14 digs and Katie Mull added 18 assists and 10 digs to lead the Freddies (5-6).

Hannah Logan had 11.5 blocks, Nichole Green had 13 digs, Maddie Hinton dished out 15 assists and Abbie Waddell had nine kills to lead the Vikings (9-5).

Newark Catholic def. Utica 25-19, 25-19, 25-21

Bella Ellis turned in a solid performance with seven assists and seven digs, but Utica fell in straight sets at Newark Catholic in Licking County League play on Sept. 28.

Brynn Peddicord had 10 kills, 11 digs and seven aces; Nikki Langenbrunner had 21 assists and Brooklyn Smith had 15 digs to lead the Green Wave (10-4, 10-1).

Georgia Gamble had 10 digs and three kills, Laini Crawmer had four kills and Emilee Ellis had five assists for Utica (2-12, 2-8).

Bloom-Carroll def. Utica 25-12, 25-14, 25-18

Lauren Laski had 12 kills and eight digs to pace host Bloom-Carroll in a straight-set win over Utica in non-league play on Sept. 26.

Lauren Robinson had 18 assists, Kacie Nafzger had 10 digs and Mckenna Wiseman had six aces to pace the Bulldogs (4-7).

Lily Borem had six kills and Laini Crawmer added more five for Utica. Emilee Ellis had six assists and Bella Ellis had a solid all-around performance with five kills, six assists and 11 digs.

Worthington Christian def. East Knox 25-20, 25-8, 25-10

Jaclynn Mahle had 13 digs and Shanda Melick added 10 to help East Knox turn in a solid defensive effort. But host Worthington Christian was too strong in a three-set win over the Bulldogs in non-league play on Sept. 26 in Worthington.

Melick also led with three assists, Anjel Montgomery had four kills and Sydney Boggs added a pair of aces for the Bulldogs (1-12).

BOYS SOCCER

Austin Smith had a hat trick and Xavier Privette added two goals to lead the Highland boys soccer team to a 6-2 win at Pleasant in non-league play on Sept. 26. in Marion.

Privette headed in a Cody Thomas corner kick for the first goal, and Aiden Ward and Smith added goals to help the Scots (5-3-2) build a 3-0 lead at the break.

Privette opened the second half with his second goal, and Smith scored twice to account for the final margin.

Caleb Hunter and Ashton Smith each had assists in the win for Highland, which is 3-0-1 in its last four games.
