James E. Coyer

MOUNT VERNON – James E. Coyer, 70, of Mount Vernon, passed away Saturday morning, Sept. 19, 2020, surrounded by his family. He was born on Jan. 8, 1950, in Matewan, West Virginia, to the late Otis Wallace and Gertrude (Kennedy) Wallace.
Jim was a member of the VFW in Mount Gilead and the Ford Club in Columbus. He enjoyed collecting cars, watching NASCAR, the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Cleveland Browns and Indians, and the Cincinnati Bengals. James was a huge Elvis fan, having made several trips to Graceland and many pictures with Elvis impersonators. His greatest passion in life was spending time with his family making memories they will remember for a lifetime.
Jim is survived by his children, Jenny Martindale and her husband, Todd, of Centerburg and Jamie Grubaugh and her husband, Bill Berger, of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Taylor, Miranda, Makaila, Makenna, Lance and Austin; and great-grandchildren, Kinsley, Barrett and Jaxson; his faithful companion of over 20 years, Jenny Skaggs; the mother of his children, Jackie Mahinck; and many friends.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his sister Ava Maynard; and a brother, Bill Wallace.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 25, at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 25, in Friendship Cemetery near Mount Vernon.

Steven L. Davis

MOUNT VERNON – Steven L. Davis, 51, of Mount Vernon, passed away Sept. 21, 2020, in Coshocton County, from injuries sustained in a work accident. He was born on April 27, 1968, in Mount Vernon, to Garnet (Hiles) Popham and the late Richard Davis.
Steve was a 1986 graduate of Utica High School. He was a member of the Utica Church of Christ, the St. Louisville Beagle Club, and Utica Masonic Lodge #291.
He is survived by his mother, Garnet (Dallas) Popham of Mount Vernon; his wife, Liz (Poling) Davis; several cousins; and his beloved dogs, Abby, Suzie and Bugs.
He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Davis.
A funeral service for Steve will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Utica Church of Christ, with Pastor Doug Swan officiating. Burial will follow in South Lawn Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the church; located at 115 N. Central Ave., in Utica; where a Masonic service will begin at 7 p.m.

Walter Ray Mills

MOUNT VERNON – Walter Ray Mills, 83, of Mount Vernon, passed away on Monday, Sept. 21, 2020, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on April 15, 1937, in Drill, Virginia, the son of Walter and Rosa Belle (Brown) Mills. Ray proudly served in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1959.
Ray married Betty Wilson on Feb. 1, 1958, and shortly thereafter moved to Knox County where he was employed at Chattanooga Glass. Upon the closing of the glass company, Ray took employment with the Knox County Highway Department and retired from there in 1999.
Ray was a faithful member for 60 years of First Baptist Church in Mount Vernon. In his free time he enjoyed hunting, singing and playing the guitar. Ray took pleasure in singing and playing his guitar at local nursing homes so residents could enjoy live music. Most important to him was the quality time he had with his children and grandchildren.
Ray is survived by his loving wife, Betty (Wilson) Mills; his children, David Ray (Sharon) Mills of Gambier, Robin Anne Mills of Columbus and Julie Lynn (James) Mills of Columbus; grandchildren, Katie Hill, Angie Hatzifotinos, Jennifer Wilson and Ceree Mills; five great-grandchildren, Lelia, Laura, Lydia, Libby and Lanie; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Ray was preceded in death by two brothers, Andy Mills and Ken Mills; and two sisters, Opal Crusenberry and June Seavolt.
A funeral service for Ray will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 23, beginning at 2 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon, OH 43050, where friends may call from 12 noon until the time of service. A burial with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will follow in Mound View Cemetery. Pastor Bill Barton will be officiating.

Linden E. Scheff

UTICA – A funeral service for Linden E. Scheff, 101, of Utica, will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, at the Utica Church of Christ, 115 N. Central Ave., Utica, with Doug Swan and Don Allen officiating. Burial will follow at Bell Cemetery. Calling hours will be held from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
Linden was born on Jan. 28, 1919, in Batemantown, to the late Albert and Edna (Hair) Scheff. He went to be with the Lord on Sept. 18, 2020, passing away at his residence surrounded by his loved ones.
Linden was a farmer and worked in sales and service in Fredericktown. He took two years off from work to build a new home for his in-laws. He returned to work at Mount Vernon Farmer Exchange and retired from there.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Leona Heslip of Fredericktown; and his wife, Annetta (VanWinkle) Scheff of Utica.
Linden is survived by many special friends, including Marty James of Mount Vernon and the Larry Frieseland family of Utica. He will be missed by his many friends. Linden was a fine gentleman. He enjoyed woodworking, making stained-glass projects and socializing with his many friends. He also loved golf and watching the Buckeye football games. He was a long-time member of the Utica Church of Christ.

Gladola Todd-Driftmyer

MOUNT VERNON – Gladola Todd-Driftmyer, 91, of Mount Vernon, passed away on Friday, Sept. 18, 2020, at the Ohio Eastern Star Home in Mount Vernon. She was born on March 23, 1929, in Nancy, Kentucky, to the late Thomas W. and Grace B. (Rogers) Todd.
Gladola was raised on a farm with ten brothers and sisters in the Lake Cumberland area of southern Kentucky. She was the valedictorian of her senior class. Gladola and Clarence Driftmyer started dating while attending God’s Bible School in Cincinnati, Ohio. Gladola’s adult life started in earnest when she and Clarence Driftmyer were married in 1955. They spent the next 45 years in passionate service to people through ministry at the Church of the Nazarene congregations. During those many years of ministry, Gladola was known as a charming and devoted friend to everyone she met. She was always looking for ways to help others and the church family she deeply loved.
Outside of church, one of her great passions of life was flowers. She was an active member of flower clubs and won many flower arrangement awards over the years. Gladola had numerous flower beds around her retirement home, and they were some of the great joys of her retirement years. She will be greatly missed by her family.
Gladola is survived by her sons, Paul (Pamela) Driftmyer and Mark Driftmyer; sisters, Freda Kenny and Lois Baumgardner; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents, Gladola was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; brothers, Omer, Paul, John, Edgar and Thomas Todd; and sisters, Gladys Hines and Marie Mason.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, Sept. 25, from 11 to noon; with a funeral service starting at noon at Lakeholm Church of the Nazarene; 16001 Glen Road, Mount Vernon, OH 43050; with Pastor Scott Sharpes and Pastor Bob Morrison officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.

Jack L. Vernon

MOUNT VERNON – Jack L. Vernon, 78, of Mount Vernon, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2020, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Jack was born on Aug. 14, 1942, in Mount Vernon, the son of Lawrence and Cecil (Whetsel) Vernon. He was a kind and tender-hearted man, always willing to give a handshake and a smile. Jack touched many lives over the years and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Jack proudly served in the United States Army during Vietnam as a medic. After the war, Jack continued to follow his passion for helping others and became a paramedic for the life support/paramedic services of Mercy and Martin Memorial Hospitals. He later became a Respiratory Therapist for Knox Community Hospital, then later retiring from Jeld-Wen Windows.
Jack was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Mount Vernon. The greatest joy in Jack’s life was his family, he absolutely loved spending time with his wife Barbara and their family. Don’t forget his love for the Buckeyes!!! “OH-IO”
He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Barbara (Conkle/Holt) Vernon; his children, Amy Camillo, Jeffrey (Mandy) Holt and Travis (Rebecca) Holt; grandchildren, Nicholas Camillo, Jacob Camillo, AJ Camillo, Brandon Holt, Emily Holt, Shelby Holt, Brittney Holt, Dariane Holt, Ethan Holt, McKenzie Holt and Elliot Holt; and siblings, Martha Criss and Will (Charlotte) Vernon.
Besides his parents, Jack was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Natalie Camillo; a brother, Herb Vernon; and a sister, Edith Skeen.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 24, beginning at noon at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, OH 43050, where friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
