MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Public Library currently offers a crocheting class for experienced people who already know how to crochet or for people who want to learn how to crochet and have little or no prior experience.

The last day for the class is Monday, March 16 and will be held in the solarium room of the library.

The class was started by Lisa Blaisdell, an employee of the library who wanted to take her passion for crocheting and creating things and turn it into a group that people could go to at the library.

“I’m the office manager,” said Blaisdell. “I’m an ordering and purchasing agent. I plan programs, parties, and staff meetings. I like to crochet, I like to sew, and I like to craft. I’m also a part of adult services. I’ve been doing crafting programs for five or six years now, and I do them at all the libraries in the county around the holidays. The meetings happen during the winter months, because during the summer months, people don’t typically crochet as much. I also have a sewing class that meets once a month.”

The meetings are meant to be fun in addition to being a great learning experience for members who might not know that much about crocheting. Regardless of one’s skill level at crocheting, one can find the desired company at these library crochet meetings. Refreshments are provided.

“The meetings are very casual,” said Blaisdell. “I usually have beverages and cookies for the meetings. For some people, the meetings are about comradery and hanging out with people who have the same interests. For others, the meetings are about total instruction. Usually, we just hang out and meet new people, see what they are working on and see what their interests are.”

For anyone interested in learning how to crochet, the process of crocheting can be taught using a fairly simple method.

“Crocheting is simply pulling a loop through,” said Blaisdell. “You’re using a hook and pulling yarn through. People understand that, if you put it in basic language. Crocheting is built on basics.”
