SPARTA — After a long and fruitful season, Camberly Schade, a dedicated student athlete and Highland Fighting Scot, has made it to state in cross country. She will run in the Division II race Saturday at 11:45 a.m. at National Trails Raceway in Hebron.
Schade is described by her coach as an athlete with an unquenchable work ethic and a role model for the other runners on the Highland cross country team.
Schade had some tough battles to face before making it to state and every step of the way she proved that she was able to compete at such a high level in cross country.
“Cam placed second at our league meet (KMAC) which could arguably be labeled as one of the toughest leagues in the state,” said Williams. “We knew at this point she was where she needed to be. At the Central Ohio District meet at Hilliard Darby, Cam raced very well and placed sixth, which allowed her to move on to the regional meet at Pickerington North High School. In very adverse conditions, Cam once again raced very well and placed seventh, almost catching two other runners at the finish line.”
Schade described her running process and how she prepared for such a successful cross country season and how she found encouragement from her supportive teammates.
“Pretty much all summer until now we have been training,” said Schade. “At first, we started easy, then it got harder when the season started. Tuesday and Thursday were definitely tough days; especially Tuesday when we did speed work for long distances at a time. We all worked together and pushed each other to get better. I tried to keep our team motivated and inspired to do their best!”
What’s next for Schade after the big state run? Schade said that she wants to eventually pursue cross country at the collegiate level.
“I definitely think I will do cross country at the college level. I love the team bonds that are formed during cross country and I really enjoy doing it,” said Schade.
