MOUNT VERNON — It is time for student readers throughout the county to pick up their Battle of the Books reading lists at the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County and begin their reading adventures.
Informational nights for interested students, parents and coaches will be held at the Main Branch of the Public Library Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. and Oct. 3 at 4:30 p.m. in the large meeting room in the basement. If interested just choose the one that best suits your schedule.
Marilyn Chidester, Coordinator for Battle of the Books, will introduce the game, explain what is expected and answer any questions you might have. The 2020 Battle will be held March 26, 2020 at Mount Vernon High School.
Battle of the Books is a competitive game in which fifth grade teams read from a specially chosen reading list, practice together with a coach and identify the titles and authors when given questions. It is open to all fifth graders in Knox County who love reading and competition and want to represent their school proudly.
All but two schools have their coaches raring to go. Coaches volunteer their time and may be a teacher, librarian, parent or someone who simply loves kids and books. Coaches are still needed for Wiggin Street and Fredericktown schools.
