Clear the Shelters event to adopt out dogs

MOUNT VERNON — The Knox County Dog Shelter, 285 Columbus Road, Mount Vernon, will be part of Saturday’s nationwide Clear the Shelters event, intended to find forever homes for adoptable animals.
The event, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will involve the county Dog Shelter partnering with Dogs of Knox, one of the county’s animal adoption organizations. Dog Warden John Carhart said the event is providing an opportunity for adoption at $60 per dog, half of the normal cost of $120. In addition to vaccinations, dogs also receive microchips so they can be tracked if lost, and are spayed or neutered before going home with a family or caring individual. There are currently 30 dogs at the county shelter, of which 18 were available for adoption as of Thursday.
