Cold fronts

I hate cold fronts. It seems to be a requirement that if I have a fishing trip planned, and especially if I have a tournament scheduled, that a front rolls through, leaving us with a drop in temperature, high and clear skies and wind, usually cold wind.
My tournament was on Seneca Lake Saturday and the end of the week gave us lots of rain and falling temperatures. I wasn’t concerned about the water conditions because the lake is fed mostly by small creeks, but a forecast for clear skies should have warned me off.
The wind blew all day, mostly out of the north, and the few areas where you could find a little shelter were sure to have several boats trying to get in (there was another tournament on the lake so there were a lot of boats running around).
The tournament winner caught only three keeper bass, but they were nice fish, totaling about 8.5 pounds. I believe he caught them on a white spinnerbait.
Another member told me he caught several fish on a black worm fished very slowly in rocky areas, although all his fish were too small to weigh in.
I fished some of the same areas, and also similar ones around the lake, with spinnerbaits, crankbaits, worms and bladed jigs, but produced nothing. I don’t know why, but I suspect I was fishing too quickly. I have a tendency to do that.
It makes for a long drive home.
Youth derby
The annual youth fishing derby, sponsored by the Knox County Fish and Game Club, will take place Saturday at the middle lake of Ariel-Foundation Park, starting about 9 a.m. Fishing tackle and bait will be available, along with free food for the youth.
Correction
A couple weeks ago I mentioned the Pete Taylor Memorial Tournament on Buckeye Lake this weekend, but I had the day wrong. The tournament is Saturday, not Sunday out of the Lieb’s Island ramp. Registration starts at 5:30 a.m. and tournament is from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The entry fee is only $10 per person and kids under 15 fish free. Proceeds go to the Hospice of Central Ohio. There are also a $5 big bass pot and a $5 side pot, so you can fish everything for $20.
This has always been a fun tournament, and one my daughter and I used to fish together, but it hasn’t been held for a few years due to the low lake levels while the dam was being rebuilt.
