“The Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club is proud to sponsor this awards program which recognizes both excellence and academic achievement of students from Mount Vernon High School,” said Diane Goodrich, chairperson of the Kiwanis Club of Mount Vernon’s Vocational Guidance Committee. “We’re looking to these students as future leaders. …We’re really proud of the achievements that they have made so far.”
Guest speaker John M. Berry, president of Central Ohio Technical College, shared his top 10 secrets of college success. He advised students to take control of their experiences, be selective with their professors, attend and participate in class, adjust their attention span, study hard, always answer the question the professor asks, utilize practice tests, connect with their professors and know your major on the way in.
Most importantly, Perry urged students to “pursue your passion, whatever it is you want to do, whoever it is you want to become.”
Thirty juniors and 31 seniors received certificates for being in the top 10 percent of their class.
Afterwards, more than 80 awards of $50 each were presented for excellence in a particular course or for showing promise in a future career field.
“One of the purposes of Kiwanis is to serve the youth in our community and we feel that one of the ways that we can do that is to recognize a wide variety of students who have excelled in a particular field,” said Goodrich.
Seven students received special honors and a $100 award. Herbert Meyer and Clare Mazzei won the Male and Female Most Dedicated awards; Chase Holdener and Josephine Noonan won the male and female Best Academic awards; Zynnia Peterson won the KCCC Most Outstanding award; Sarah Lord received the Female — Most Outstanding Award; and Zachary Ballenger won the Male — Most Outstanding Award.
“We’re proud of our school system and these young achievers,” said Nancy Vail, who presented an award on behalf of the Mount Vernon City Council.
“I think I speak for everyone when I say thank you parents for raising such wonderful children,” said Judge Richard Wetzel before presenting two awards.
Goodrich closed the ceremony with a 20-word reminder to all in the audience.
“I recently read some advice and I think it’s probably appropriate regardless of our stage in life,” she said. “Be kind, work hard, stay humble, smile often, stay loyal, be honest, never stop learning, always be thankful and love.”
