MOUNT VERNON — Mitchell Soviak was named Crossroads League Field Athlete of the Week after a record-setting weekend at the Jesse Owens Classic in Columbus.
Soviak finished third in the shot put at the Classic, and did so with a school-record throw of 19.33 meters. Soviak’s throw helped him finish ahead of athletes from Ohio State, Michigan State, Central Michigan and Indianapolis (Ind.). The throw would have been the 18th-best in all of NCAA Division I this season, and would have won last year’s NAIA National Championship.
The award is the second of the season for Soviak, after the senior earned the award on March 25. It is the third Field Athlete of the Week award that Soviak has earned at MVNU.
