MVNU hires Sherer as first men’s volleyball coach

MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon Nazarene University Athletics Director Chip Wilson has announced the hiring of Doug Sherer as the first head coach of the men’s volleyball program.
MVNU will begin men’s volleyball as a club sport during the 2019-20 season, with the program transitioning to varsity status for the 2020-21 season.
Sherer comes to MVNU with over 20 years of coaching experience, including four years as the head girls’ volleyball coach at Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, where he amassed a record of 57-40. Sherer also spent one year on staff as a volunteer assistant and recruiting coordinator at Malone University under head coach Tanya Hockman.
The bulk of Sherer’s coaching experience comes from his over 20 years as a Junior Olympic coach for players of all ages. Junior Olympic volleyball is a national development program aimed at helping players from ages 10 to 18 learn the game of volleyball.
In addition to this experience, Sherer has officiated for volleyball, and has six years of collegiate experience and 10 years as a USA Volleyball Regional official. Sherer also played 10 years of men’s volleyball in USA Volleyball at the AA/Open and A levels, competing in the 1988 AVP Beach Event and 1989 USA Indoor Nationals.
Sherer, a graduate of Ball State University, has a wife, Karrin, and three children, daughters Erika (26) and Kendra (20) and son Jake (23), an MVNU graduate.
