Chess FUNdamentals with Dean
Those interested in learning how to play chess can register for this virtual event from the Public Library of Mount Vernon & Knox County, which is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 2, from 4-5 p.m. Registration is required at www.knox.net/fredericktown-branch-events. Open swim
The YMCA of Mount Vernon offers open swimming, with one lap lane open Monday through Friday from 9:50-11:45 a.m. This event is open for children and families. The YMCA is located at 103 N. Main St., Mount Vernon.
Vaughn Wiester's Famous Jazz Orchestra concert
Enjoy the sounds of Stan Kenton, Duke Ellington and other big band greats at this free concert at Ariel Foundation Park, 10 Pittsburgh Ave., Mount Vernon. The ensemble is made up of 22 musicians who have rehearsed for more than 20 years. The concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6.
Blood drive
The Mount Vernon Grand Hotel, located at 12 Public Square, is hosting an American Red Cross blood drive from noon to 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 31. Registration is required to donate. Call 1-800-733-2767 to schedule an appointment or visit www.redcrossblood.org.
Living Room Series: Lydia Brownfield
Lydia Brownfield will perform at the Woodward Opera House, 107 S. Main St. in Mount Vernon, at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11. Brownfield, a Columbus native, has been compared to Alison Kraus and Sheryl Crow, the Woodward Opera House said. Tickets are $15.
