Mount Vernon residents will see the Relay for America team carry a single American flag through town July 1 as part of a 3,000‑mile journey from San Francisco to Washington, D.C., marking the nation’s 250th birthday.

The relay team emphasized that additional runners are needed to carry the flag through Mount Vernon and Knox County. Segment 208 covers 12.3 miles in Mount Vernon, followed by Segment 209 with 12.7 miles in Knox County. Both are scheduled for July 1, and community members are encouraged to join in to help carry the flag through the area.

Relay for America is the nation’s first coast‑to‑coast, mass‑participation flag relay. More than 250 runners are passing the flag hand to hand across 15 states over 20 nonstop days, with the finish scheduled for July 4 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Every mile of the relay is carried in honor of a U.S. veteran, nominated by someone who knew their service. In total, 3,000 names are being honored across 3,016 miles, with each runner dedicating their mile to a veteran. It is a way to recognize those who “ran miles together that the rest of us never had to run,” while participants now run a few of their own in tribute.

Relay for America was conceived in two weeks by a small volunteer crew. The event is nonpartisan, designed to unite Americans “one mile at a time.”

The relay was founded in 2026 by endurance runners Joe Nail and Wyatt Moss. Nail is a U.S. Army National Guard infantry officer, Stanford MBA, Knight‑Hennessy Scholar, Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree, and founder of Lead For America. Moss is an Atlanta‑based endurance athlete and viral creator who ran marathons in all 50 states in 2024 and completed the “777” — seven marathons on seven continents in seven days.

Volunteers have joined runners in deserts, cities, and even in the middle of the night, handing off the flag mile after mile. Each handoff represents both a physical challenge and a symbolic tribute to veterans whose names and stories accompany the journey.

As of this writing, the relay is 80.6 percent complete — 2,431.8 miles of 3,016.2 covered — with 10 states crossed on day 16. The projected finish is July 3 at 9:55 p.m. EDT, nearly 15 hours ahead of schedule.

Mount Vernon residents are invited to cheer, run alongside, or support the relay as it passes through town. Progress can be tracked at relayforamerica.org or on Instagram @RelayForAmerica.
