Spring fishing is picking up across Knox County as warming temperatures bring increased activity to local lakes, rivers and nearby fisheries throughout north central Ohio.

Several key public fishing areas are available in the county that offer steady spring opportunities for fishermen.

Knox County waters offer strong spring fishing

Knox Lake and Wildlife Area near Fredericktown remains one of the most popular local spots. The 467-acre reservoir features wooded cover in its upper sections and supports largemouth bass, channel and flathead catfish, crappie, bluegill and yellow perch. Motor limits on the lake also help keep fishing conditions quieter and more natural.

Nearby Kokosing Lake Wildlife Area northwest of Mount Vernon offers similar spring action, with largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, channel catfish and bullhead. As water warms, anglers also see seasonal movement of suckers, smallmouth bass and rock bass.

The Kokosing River is another major local fishery and a designated state water trail. It is best known for smallmouth bass but also supports rock bass, sunfish, channel catfish and many other species. Popular access points include Hope Fishing Access, Riverside Park and Memorial Park.

To the northwest, the Mohican River near Brinkhaven Park and wildlife area offers deeper pools and riffles that hold smallmouth bass, rock bass, channel catfish and suckers. The river supports both wading and small boat fishing depending on conditions.

Rainbow trout stocking

ODNR is also rolling out its spring rainbow trout stocking program statewide, releasing more than 80,000 trout at 93 public locations from March through May. In Knox County, Foundation Park in Mount Vernon has been stocked since March 13. Nearby sites include Mount Gilead Lake and Malabar Farm State Park’s Inn Pond.

The trout are raised in state hatcheries and are about 10 to 13 inches when released. Fishing is best within the first couple of weeks after stocking before warmer water slows their activity. Some locations also include youth-only fishing periods right after stocking.

Anglers 16 and older need a valid Ohio fishing license, and the daily limit is five trout. License sales help fund fish hatcheries and conservation programs.

Bass tournaments being held nearby

Spring is also a busy time for bass anglers through the Ohio Mega Bass Tournament Trail (OMBTT), which runs events across central Ohio, including waters near Knox County.

During spring, tournaments focus on bass moving into shallow water to spawn. Events are often held on lakes such as Buckeye Lake and nearby fisheries, where anglers compete for five-fish limits under structured rules.

The spring tournament season is an important part of the OMBTT schedule, giving anglers a chance to build points early before larger summer events. Many of the stops are within easy driving distance of Knox County and highlight some of the best bass fishing conditions of the year.
