The Mount Vernon Farmers Market announced on May 2 that it will begin its 2026 season on Public Square, operating from 9 a.m. to noon each Saturday through October, rain or shine.
Now in its 23rd year, the market brings together local farmers, bakers, vendors, and musicians. Early season produce includes asparagus, rhubarb, lettuce, and garlic scapes. Later in the year, shoppers can expect strawberries, cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, mushrooms and sweet corn. All produce is grown within fifty miles of Public Square and vendors are required to complete Good Agricultural Practices training offered by OSU Extension Educator Sabrina Schirtzinger to ensure compliance with Ohio Department of Agriculture food safety regulations.
The market also features locally roasted coffee and baked goods such as sourdough bread, nut brittle, cookies, pies and cinnamon rolls. Raw honey, flavored honey and maple syrup are available as well. A new vendor will offer knife sharpening services this year.
Several programs aim to make shopping accessible for all income levels: SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), Produce Perks including the Fruit & Vegetable Program from Produce Perks, Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, WIC (Women Infants and Children) Nutrition Program, Knox County Task Force for Older Adults Eat Fresh Eat Local program and Produce Rx offered by Knox Community Health Center.
Local artists will provide music throughout the season with performances scheduled by Desmond McLennon on May 23; Side Effects on June 6; Mary Miller on June 20; and Echo on June 27. Representatives from Knox County Safe Communities will promote the annual Click or Ticket seatbelt safety campaign at the market on May 16 alongside law enforcement officers from local agencies.
Fredericktown resident Deva Geiger has been named market coordinator for 2026. Updates are available via Facebook and Instagram or monthly broadcasts on WMVO 100.9 FM at 10 a.m., according to the organization's website.
