The City of Mount Vernon is mourning the loss of six Air National Guard service members who died during an air refueling mission in Iraq.
Three of the fallen were Ohio natives serving with the 121st Air Refueling Wing of the Ohio Air National Guard, based at Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base in Columbus.
"Our hearts are with their families, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time," the City recently shared on Facebook. "We keep them in our prayers and honor the service and sacrifice of these brave service members, whose dedication to our country and commitment to protecting others will never be forgotten."
City officials said the community stands in solemn gratitude for the service of the fallen and in solidarity with their families, fellow service members, and all those mourning the loss.
