Several teenagers from the area had the opportunity to experience aviation firsthand through orientation flights with the Civil Air Patrol at Knox County Airport on December 21. The cadets, part of the Civil Air Patrol Knox County Airport Cadet Flight, spent three hours flying in a Cessna 182 aircraft. The flights aimed to introduce them to aviation science, covering topics such as aircraft parts, navigation, weather, instruments, and flight maneuvers.

During the flights, which included a stop at Newark-Heath Airport for landing procedure briefings, cadets were allowed to take control of the aircraft briefly. Cadet Jenna Jurkowitz expressed her excitement about piloting an airplane: "I’ve been in an airplane before," she said, "but I was surprised when I was allowed to take the controls during the flight! This is definitely something I want to do again!"

The orientation flights are part of the Aerospace Education component of the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program. This program includes aerospace learning modules and achievements that help cadets progress. The "O-Flights" provide practical experience that complements classroom learning. Other aspects of being a CAP Cadet include leadership training, character development, and physical fitness.

Civil Air Patrol pilots Daniel Wilson and Jim Janik volunteered their time for these flights. The organization provided aircraft and fuel at no cost to participants or pilots. Besides Jenna Jurkowitz, other participating cadets included Baylee Mitchell, Benjamin Steele, Asher Bressi, and Griffin Davies.

The Knox County Airport Cadet Flight meets every Monday evening at Knox County Airport terminal building in Mt. Vernon. The program is open to youth aged 12-18 with volunteer opportunities available for adults as well.
