Twenty dogs were adopted from the Knox County Dog Shelter in November, as reported by Dog Warden Brian Biggerstaff to the Board of Commissioners on December 16.
"We've housed over 90 dogs at one point, in crates and different things in the garage and different areas. But I think the shelter is designed to hold 73 kennels for dogs, or can," Biggerstaff said, according to a video of the meeting.
According to Biggerstaff's report, 29 dogs entered the shelter in November. Of these, 15 were owner surrenders and 14 were strays. During the same month, 35 dogs left the shelter. This included 20 adoptions, six euthanasias, and nine pets returned to their owners. Five of the euthanasias were requested by owners due to bite behavior or medical reasons. One dog was euthanized due to aggressive behavior.
Biggerstaff also said that as of December 15, there were ten dogs at the shelter, with eight available for adoption. One dog was awaiting pickup by its owner and another was awaiting a rescue group. Two dogs have been at the shelter for more than 60 days.
In addition, Deputy Brian Weiser issued three citations for failure to control during November.
Biggerstaff agreed to present a report on how many licenses have been obtained at the shelter, through the auditor's office, or online. Dog license applications are available online at www.knoxcountyauditor.org/site-links/dog-license/.
