On October 25, 2025, Knox County participated in the DEA National Drug Take Back Day, collecting a total of 136.8 pounds of unused, unwanted, and expired medications. The collection was part of a national effort to safely dispose of prescription drugs and included several sharps containers.

The event saw contributions from various locations: Knox Public Health and the Mount Vernon Health Center collected 63 pounds; the Danville Police Department gathered 16 pounds; the Fredericktown Police Department received 38 pounds; and Foster’s Pharmacy in Centerburg took in 19.8 pounds.

Communities Coming Together, previously known as the Knox Substance Abuse Action Team (KSAAT), expressed gratitude to local law enforcement agencies for their support. "We extend sincere appreciation to the Fredericktown Police Department, Danville Police Department, Knox County Sheriff’s Office, and Mount Vernon Police Department for leading each drop-off site," they said. Volunteers were also thanked for their time and efforts in making the event successful.

For those who missed this opportunity, year-round anonymous drop-boxes are available at several locations including the Knox County Sheriff’s Office and local police departments. Residents are advised to place medications in clear Ziploc bags without liquids, inhalers, syringes, or illegal substances. Additionally, free Deterra Drug Deactivation Bags can be requested by calling Knox Public Health at 740-392-2200.

A similar event is planned for April 2026. Those interested in volunteering can reach out via email at tcockrell@knoxhealth.com.
