The annual Food For The Hungry Drive has commenced in Mount Vernon, Ohio, with a target of raising $340,000. This community-wide initiative aims to support Interchurch Social Services, The Salvation Army, and other local organizations providing food assistance. Food for the Hungry - Mount Vernon (FFTH) is dedicated to reducing hunger in Knox County through this drive, which includes various events and collections culminating in a simulcast on December 12.
In its 44th year, FFTH continues to address food insecurity exacerbated by inflation and reduced government funding. According to a 2022 survey by the Knox County Food Council, over 14,000 individuals in the county face food insecurity. Interchurch Social Services has seen an increase from serving 200 families monthly in 2022 to nearly 700 families monthly in 2025.
The Mid-Ohio Food Collective remains a crucial supplier for FFTH-supported agencies. Despite decreased buying power—$1 now buys $4.56 worth of food—FFTH relies on donor generosity to help alleviate poverty in Knox County.
Last year's drive exceeded its goal by raising $342,459.11 and collecting 11 truckloads of food. Funds from the previous drive were used for Summer and Winter Grants aimed at feeding children dependent on school meals during the academic year. Grant recipients will be announced on November 20.
A recent collaboration between FFTH, Knox County Foundation, and ISS resulted in a pop-up pantry serving over 200 families on November 1. Most funds (68%) and all collected food are allocated to community partners like Interchurch Social Services and The Salvation Army. Remaining funds will support future grants and organizational expenses.
Upcoming events supporting FFTH include the Turkey Trot 5K on November 27, Mount Vernon Holiday Parade on November 30, Fire and Ice event on December 6, FFTH LIVE and Drive Day on December 12, and Snowflake Gala on December 13.
