Ohio Magazine has recognized Mount Vernon as one of Ohio's Best Hometowns for 2025-2026. The accolade is highlighted in the magazine's November/December 2025 issue and will reappear in the July/August 2026 edition. This recognition underscores Mount Vernon's livability, historical significance, vibrant arts scene, and forward-thinking leadership.

The selection process involved nominations in spring and site visits across Ohio during summer. Editors assessed finalists based on Community Spirit, Education, Entertainment, Health and Safety, Business Environment, and Culture and Heritage.

Mayor Matthew Starr commented on the achievement: "An honor like this is the result of a group effort. It takes a collaborative process involving countless partners, from the largest businesses and community organizations in town to individual residents demonstrably proud of where they live, to make Mount Vernon what it is today."

U.S. Representative Troy Balderson issued a proclamation congratulating Mount Vernon: "Mount Vernon residents should take great pride in their community and the positive atmosphere they provide to visitors." Mayor Starr expressed gratitude for Balderson's support: "We’re grateful to Representative Balderson for recognizing the great things going on here. He’s been a valuable partner, and we’re fortunate to have him in Washington looking out for our interests."

The Ohio Magazine article highlights several aspects of Mount Vernon, including its downtown area, arts scene featuring the Woodward Opera House—the oldest authentic opera house in North America reopened in 2019—and Ariel~Foundation Park opened in 2015. The city's focus on housing as an economic development issue and infrastructure projects like the improved State Route 13 corridor are also noted. This project aims to reroute truck traffic around downtown by next June, reducing truck presence by 50%.

Other cities recognized as Best Hometowns include Ashland; Barnesville in Belmont County; Green near Akron; and Yellow Springs near Dayton.
