Teen Writing Program at The Annex | Mount Vernon Public Library

The Public Library of Mount Vernon & Knox County has introduced a new twist to its Teen Writing Program, aiming to support young writers in their creative endeavors. The program, held at The Annex, offers workshops led by experienced instructors Jordan Shaevitz and Mattie Lawler. These instructors bring a wealth of experience from teaching creative workshops in various settings.

The program is designed to nurture the next generation of writers while providing high school students with academic support. "The series began with a workshop on character building. Students created their own characters and practiced dialogue through improvisational skits. It was a blast!" says Shaevitz.

Each week, participants receive feedback on their creative writing and assistance with homework, college essays, or scholarship applications. Lawler mentions that "future workshop plans will include small group and personalized writing enrichment activities and games."

This initiative is a collaboration between the Public Library of Mount Vernon & Knox County and The Annex, an art initiative by The Gund at Kenyon College. Jamie Lyn Smith-Fletcher from the library highlights the suitability of The Annex for such programs: "It’s welcoming, bright, and the space lends itself to lively and interesting opportunities to explore art and writing."

Teen Writing Program sessions are scheduled at The Annex on Thursdays at 4:30 P.M., covering dates in October and November. Participation is free for teens aged 13-18 without requiring registration. More details can be found on their website or by contacting them via email or phone.
