Communities across the United States are preparing to commemorate Constitution Week, which begins on September 17. This date marks the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787 at Independence Hall in Philadelphia by 39 delegates at the Constitutional Convention.

The Daughters Of The American Revolution (DAR) played a pivotal role in establishing this annual observance. In 1955, they initiated efforts to create a week dedicated to celebrating the Constitution's signing. Their campaign led to President Dwight D. Eisenhower signing Constitution Week into law on August 2, 1956.

Local chapters of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) will host various events throughout the week to honor this foundational document. One notable event is "Bells Across America," where bells nationwide will ring simultaneously at 4 p.m. EDT on September 17. Other activities include educational displays in schools and libraries, proclamation signings, public presentations, broadcast interviews, and outdoor signage.

For those interested in participating or learning more about local events during Constitution Week, additional information can be found on the DAR website at https://www.dar.org/national-society/education/constitution-week or by contacting local DAR chapters.
