The Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County has announced a preview event for the upcoming Middle Earth March, in celebration of National Hobbit Day. The event, featuring Maxwell Leaning, is scheduled for August 22, 2025.

According to the library, the preview event titled "Behind the Scenes: Middle Earth March Through Mount Vernon" will take place from 12 to 1 p.m. in the library’s Multipurpose Room. It will discuss plans for National Hobbit Day celebrations in downtown Mount Vernon, inspired by themes from "Lord of the Rings" and J.R.R. Tolkien's works. Attendees aged 12 and older are invited to enjoy light snacks and are encouraged to dress as hobbits.

The Downtown Mount Vernon Merchants have also announced an event called "A Middle-earth March Through Mount Vernon," set for September 20th, to commemorate National Hobbit Day. This event will feature a passport activity where participants solve riddles related to "The Hobbit" at local businesses to earn stamps. Numerous downtown shops and eateries will offer themed specials, activities, and prizes such as petting zoos, themed meals, photo opportunities, live music, and costume contests. According to Paragraphs Bookstore, this immersive experience aims to celebrate Tolkien’s works with updates and new activities expected as the date approaches.

Several downtown businesses are participating by providing themed products and experiences including sweets, drinks, axe throwing, pottery demonstrations, and flower crowns. Highlights include a Shire Petting Zoo and a book sale at Paragraphs Bookstore. Organizers advise attendees to seek information only through official channels to avoid scams. The event photo features Ariel Foundation Park with special thanks given to both the park and photographer Brian Gray for permission to use the image.
