The Mount Vernon Nazarene University (MVNU) Athletics announced the appointment of Mark Pratt as the new head softball coach on Thursday, July 24.

Pratt, who has been associated with MVNU for over a decade, brings extensive experience from his tenure in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the Crossroads League. From 2013 to 2024, he served as MVNU’s assistant softball coach, contributing significantly to the program's success, including achieving seven consecutive winning seasons and securing its first NAIA top 25 ranking in 2023.

"We are excited to have Coach Pratt leading our Lady Cougars softball program," said Chip Wilson, Director of Athletics. "His experience working with Coach Howald for 11 years and knowing the culture of the program and the MVNU mission will be helpful in the coaching transition. We look forward to the continued impact of the MVNU softball program on young lives under his leadership."

According to a press release, Pratt has specialized in pitcher-catcher training and has worked with outfielders and hitters, enhancing player development and team competitiveness. As MVNU’s primary recruiter, he successfully attracted top talent, including three of the top four all-time strikeout leaders. Prior to joining MVNU, he coached at Tree of Life Christian Schools. He and his wife Kayla have been married for 44 years and have five children, three of whom graduated from MVNU.

"I would like to thank everyone involved for giving me the opportunity to be the head softball coach at MVNU. It is such a special place filled with special people serving others for Christ," said Pratt. "I really enjoyed the 11 years I've spent under Coach Howald – I learned so much from her. It's an honor to be able to carry on the 37-year legacy that she created and build upon the success and tremendous culture she developed during her tenure. I am very excited about our team and cannot wait to get started. Go Cougars!"
