Grace Bates has been named the 2025 recipient of the Jessica Gall Scholarship. The award was presented by Jess's parents, Willie and Karen Gall, in honor of their daughter's enduring legacy.
Bates, a standout on the Mount Vernon High School softball team, will attend the University of Mount Union this fall. She plans to study criminal justice and continue her softball career.
"It means a lot because she was such an inspiration to me," Bates said of Gall.
Jessica Gall, a former Yellow Jacket, was a dual-sport athlete at the University of Rio Grande. She pursued her passion for softball but passed away shortly after graduating from high school. Her memory continues to inspire the Mount Vernon community.
"Jess was an amazing athlete and kid — an amazing student," said Mount Vernon Head Coach Ryan Pentz. "This award represents someone passionate about Jackets softball and who continues playing in college."
Pentz further explained his decision: "I chose Grace this year for the award. She has that passion and love, and I thought she was the perfect candidate."
The Jessica Gall Scholarship honors student-athletes who embody Gall’s dedication to the sport and commitment to furthering both their education and softball careers.
