North Fork Local Schools are set to make a significant change in their meal program for the 2025-2026 academic year, announcing a shift from free lunches to paid meals.
This decision follows a financial assessment, which showed the district no longer meets the required federal threshold for funding the free lunch initiative, according to a letter released by North Fork Local School District.
Based on the updated lunch pricing, meals will now cost $2.70 at Utica and Newton Elementary schools, and $3.20 at Utica High and Middle School. Breakfast will continue to be provided free of charge across all campuses, ensuring students still begin their day with a healthy meal option. The district encourages families to prepare for the transition and to explore assistance programs if needed.
Families who may qualify for support are invited to apply for the Free and Reduced-Price Meal Program. Applications are now available, both online through the district’s website and in paper form at the district office located at 312 Maple Ave, Utica, OH, as well as in all school buildings. The program aims to ensure that students from households experiencing financial difficulties continue to have access to nutritious meals during the school year.
Despite this shift, "this may change if the state of Ohio decides to implement free meals for all schools," North Fork Local Schools stated. If that occurs, families are assured that the District will promptly adjust its lunch program and communicate changes.
